ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Young & Yonder Spirits sits in a converted warehouse space in Healdsburg, founded by husband-and-wife team Zach and Morgan Robinson in 2019. The couple left tech careers in San Francisco to pursue their shared passion for craft distilling, spending two years perfecting recipes in their garage before launching their operation. The 4,000-square-foot facility houses a custom copper still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works and focuses exclusively on small-batch whiskey production. They’re producing bourbon, rye, and single malt whiskey with a commitment to local sourcing and traditional techniques. The space doubles as both production facility and tasting room, with exposed brick walls and industrial fixtures creating an intimate atmosphere where visitors can watch the distillation process while sampling spirits. Zach handles the master distiller duties while Morgan manages operations and visitor experiences, and you’ll often find one or both of them pouring tastings and sharing stories about their journey from Silicon Valley to Sonoma County. Their approach centers on patience and precision – they’re aging everything a minimum of two years despite the pressure to release young whiskey quickly.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

What sets Young & Yonder apart is their obsessive focus on grain sourcing and fermentation control. They work directly with a single farm in Petaluma for all their corn and source their barley from a maltster in Colorado who uses heritage grain varieties. Their fermentation process uses a proprietary yeast strain they developed over 18 months of experimentation, creating flavor profiles you won’t find elsewhere in Sonoma County. The Robinson’s engineering backgrounds show in their meticulous approach to every variable – from precise temperature control during mashing to their custom barrel entry proof calculations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

The tasting room feels more like visiting friends than a formal distillery tour. Zach or Morgan typically handle tastings themselves, walking you through their small lineup while explaining their production philosophy and the story behind each expression. The space is compact and unpretentious, with concrete floors and industrial lighting, but the focus stays on the spirits and conversation. You can peer through windows into the production area where their copper still and fermentation tanks are clearly visible. Tastings run about 45 minutes and include their current releases plus occasional barrel samples when available.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re into craft whiskey and appreciate meeting the actual distillers, Young & Yonder delivers an authentic experience. The Robinson’s passion is infectious, and their technical knowledge runs deep – this isn’t a marketing-driven operation. The spirits show real promise even at their young age, particularly their rye which has picked up early recognition from whiskey publications. However, don’t expect a polished tourist experience or extensive facility tours. This is a working distillery first, tasting room second. It’s perfect for serious whiskey enthusiasts who want to discover something new and support genuine craft producers.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Instagram for current hours – they’re often adjusting schedule based on production needs. Parking is limited in the industrial complex, but there’s usually street parking nearby. Ask about their barrel program if you’re interested in private selections. The best time to visit is Saturday afternoons when both founders are typically on-site. Don’t expect cocktails or extensive merchandise – they’re focused purely on their whiskey production. If you’re planning other Healdsburg stops, this pairs well with the wine tasting scene but offers a completely different, more industrial vibe.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Young & Yonder Spirits — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tastings?
Reservations aren’t required but are recommended, especially on weekends. They’re a small operation and sometimes close for production work, so calling ahead ensures they’re open and available for tastings.
How long has Young & Yonder been aging their whiskey?
They started distilling in 2019 and committed to aging everything at least two years before release. Their oldest expressions are now approaching three years, which is impressive patience for a young craft distillery.
Can I see the production process during my visit?
While they don’t offer formal tours, you can view their production area through windows in the tasting room. If Zach or Morgan aren’t actively distilling, they’re usually happy to explain their process and show you around briefly.
