Dread River Distilling Company sits in Birmingham’s Southside district at 2400 7th Avenue South, housed in a converted warehouse space that reflects the gritty, industrial character of Alabama’s steel city. Founded by Matthew Coughlin and Patrick Heist, two friends who left corporate careers to chase their bourbon dreams, the distillery opened in 2013 after a three-year journey of convincing city officials, securing permits, and learning the craft from scratch. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka on a 500-liter copper still, focusing on small-batch production that lets them experiment with different mash bills and aging techniques. The operation started as Birmingham’s first legal distillery since Prohibition, making them pioneers in Alabama’s craft spirits revival. Coughlin handles the business side while Heist manages production, and both are usually on-site to chat with visitors about their learning curve and the challenges of building a distillery in a state where liquor laws change slowly. Their tasting room occupies the front of the warehouse, with exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and large windows that let you see straight into the production area where fermentation tanks and the gleaming still dominate the space.
