ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Uncharted Alaska Distillery sits right on Main Street in downtown Ketchikan, bringing craft spirits to Alaska’s First City since 2018. Founded by locals who wanted to create something uniquely Alaskan, this small-batch operation focuses on gin, vodka, and seasonal spirits that capture the essence of Southeast Alaska. The distillery occupies a compact storefront space that doubles as production facility and tasting room, where you can watch the distilling process happen just feet from where you’re sampling. The founders started this venture after recognizing that Alaska’s pristine water and access to unique botanicals like juniper, spruce tips, and local berries could create spirits unlike anything you’d find in the Lower 48. They source ingredients locally when possible and use Ketchikan’s incredibly pure water as the base for everything they produce. The operation is intimate by design – they’re focused on quality over quantity and creating spirits that tell Alaska’s story. Visitors get an up-close look at craft distilling in action. The space feels more like a working lab than a polished tourist attraction, which means you’re getting the real deal. They’re passionate about educating people on the distilling process and how Alaska’s environment influences their spirits. It’s a genuine craft distillery experience where you can taste something you literally can’t get anywhere else.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

This is Alaska’s southeasternmost distillery, using ingredients that grow nowhere else in the world. They forage spruce tips, wild berries, and other botanicals from the Tongass National Forest to create spirits with flavors you won’t find outside of Alaska. The water comes from Ketchikan’s mountain watersheds, some of the purest you’ll find anywhere. Their gin features juniper that grows wild in Alaska along with other foraged botanicals that change seasonally. The scale is tiny – we’re talking small batches that might sell out in weeks rather than months – but that means everything is fresh and carefully crafted.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll walk into a working distillery where production happens right in front of you. The space is small and functional, with copper stills and fermentation tanks taking up most of the room alongside a simple tasting bar. Tours are informal and conversational – more like chatting with the distillers about their process than following a scripted presentation. You can taste their current lineup while watching them work, and they’re happy to explain how Alaska’s unique ingredients influence the flavors. The atmosphere is casual and educational, perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the craft.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re interested in craft spirits and want to taste something genuinely unique to Alaska, absolutely. This isn’t a big production facility with polished tours, so don’t expect Napa Valley-style experiences. What you get is authentic – real craft distillers making small batches of spirits you can’t buy anywhere else. It’s particularly worth it for gin lovers, since their botanical selection is unlike anything from traditional gin regions. The visit works well as part of exploring downtown Ketchikan, and you can easily combine it with other Main Street attractions.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting, as hours can vary with the season and cruise ship schedules. Summer is their busiest time with longer hours, while winter operations are more limited. The space is small, so groups larger than 6-8 people should definitely coordinate in advance. Ask about their seasonal botanicals – what they’re making changes throughout the year based on what’s available to forage. If you’re flying home, they can help with shipping since you can’t take bottles on planes from Alaska.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Uncharted Alaska Distillery — Visitor FAQ

What makes your spirits uniquely Alaskan?
We use botanicals foraged from the Tongass National Forest, including wild spruce tips, juniper, and seasonal berries that don’t grow anywhere else. Our water comes directly from Ketchikan’s mountain watersheds, which is incredibly pure and mineral-rich.
Can I ship bottles home if I’m traveling?
Yes, we can help arrange shipping to most states since you can’t fly with alcohol from Alaska. We’ll handle the paperwork and packaging to get your bottles home safely.
How often do your seasonal spirits change?
Our seasonal expressions depend on what we can forage throughout the year. Spring brings fresh spruce tips, summer has wild berries, and fall offers different botanicals. We typically have 2-3 seasonal releases per year in very limited quantities.
