ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Turnbuckle Distilling sits in an industrial section of Broomfield, Colorado, founded by husband-and-wife team Mike and Cindy Thompson in 2016. Mike’s background in mechanical engineering shows throughout their operation—from custom-built equipment to their methodical approach to distillation. The distillery occupies a 3,000-square-foot facility where they produce bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka using a 500-gallon copper still they designed themselves. The Thompsons started this venture after years of homebrewing and distilling as a hobby, deciding to turn their passion into a full-time business when Colorado’s craft distilling laws became more favorable. Mike handles the production side while Cindy manages the business operations and tasting room. Their approach focuses on small-batch production with careful attention to each step of the process, from grain selection to barrel aging. The facility includes a production area where visitors can see the milling, mashing, and distilling equipment in action, plus a tasting room that doubles as their retail space. They age their whiskeys in 15 and 30-gallon barrels, which allows for faster maturation in Colorado’s climate but requires constant monitoring to prevent over-oaking.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

What sets Turnbuckle apart is Mike Thompson’s engineering background, which led them to design and build much of their own equipment rather than buying standard distillery setups. Their custom 500-gallon copper still includes modifications that allow for precise control over cuts and reflux, and they’ve engineered a grain handling system that’s unusually efficient for a craft operation of their size. The name ‘Turnbuckle’ comes from Mike’s sailing background—turnbuckles are the hardware used to adjust tension in rigging, which reflects their hands-on, mechanical approach to distilling. They’re also one of the few Colorado distilleries using a combination of new and used barrels for aging, with some of their bourbon finished in wine barrels from Colorado wineries.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

The tasting room has a straightforward, no-frills atmosphere that matches the Thompsons’ practical approach to distilling. Mike often leads tours himself when he’s not in production, explaining the technical aspects of their process in detail—you’ll learn more about cuts, proof management, and barrel selection than at most distilleries. The space smells like grain and wood, with the copper still visible through windows into the production area. Tastings are conducted at a simple bar setup where Cindy walks you through their current lineup, explaining the differences between their bourbon and rye and how their smaller barrel aging affects the flavor profile. It’s not fancy, but you get genuine insight into how craft distilling actually works.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re interested in the technical side of distilling and want to learn from people who built their operation from scratch, Turnbuckle delivers. This isn’t the place for Instagram-worthy cocktails or polished presentations—it’s for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the craft. The Thompsons are generous with their time and knowledge, and you’ll leave with a better understanding of how grain becomes whiskey. However, if you’re looking for a luxurious tasting experience or elaborate tours, you might find it too basic. Their spirits are solid but still young, which is expected for a operation that’s been aging for less than a decade.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before visiting since this is still a small operation and the tasting room hours can vary based on production schedules. Mike’s often working in the distillery during the day, so afternoon visits typically offer better chances for impromptu tours. Ask about their barrel aging experiments—they’re always trying different approaches and Mike enjoys explaining the science behind their decisions. The location is in an industrial area that GPS sometimes struggles with, so look for the brewing equipment supplier next door as a landmark. Parking is easy in the industrial lot they share with neighboring businesses.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Turnbuckle Distilling — Visitor FAQ

Do you need to book tours in advance?
Tours aren’t formally scheduled, but it’s best to call ahead to make sure someone’s available to show you around. Mike often gives impromptu tours when he’s not actively distilling.
How long has your bourbon been aging?
Their bourbon has been aging 2-3 years in 30-gallon barrels. The smaller barrels speed up the aging process compared to standard 53-gallon barrels, so their 3-year bourbon tastes more mature than you’d expect.
What makes your equipment different from other distilleries?
Mike designed and built much of their equipment himself, including modifications to their copper still that give them more precise control over the distillation process. His engineering background shows throughout their setup.
