ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A South Philly Warehouse Making Real Whiskey

Otto Distilling Co. sits in a converted warehouse space on McKean Street in South Philadelphia, where founders Ian Blessing and Kurt Maitland launched their craft spirits operation in 2017. Both came from different backgrounds—Blessing from the restaurant industry and Maitland from finance—but shared a fascination with distillation that started as a hobby and evolved into something bigger. The 3,000-square-foot facility houses custom copper stills and fermentation tanks, where they focus primarily on whiskey production alongside gin and vodka. The journey from homebrew experimentation to commercial distillery took nearly three years of navigating permits, zoning issues, and equipment sourcing. They chose South Philly deliberately, wanting to be part of the city’s growing craft spirits scene while staying true to the neighborhood’s working-class character. Master distiller Blessing handles the production side, experimenting with different grain bills and aging techniques, while Maitland manages operations and distribution. What you’ll find is a no-frills operation that’s more about the craft than the show. The tasting room feels like an extension of the production floor—you can see the stills from where you’re sampling spirits. They’re producing around 500 cases annually, with plans to expand as their whiskey ages. It’s the kind of place where you can actually talk to the people making your drink, and they’ll geek out about fermentation temperatures or barrel char levels if you’re into that.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

No Polish, No Pretense Just Pure Craft

Otto stands out for being genuinely small-scale in a city where craft distilleries often feel more polished than crafty. Blessing and Maitland source their grains locally when possible and handle every step of production themselves, from milling to bottling. Their approach to whiskey-making emphasizes experimentation—they’re working with different yeast strains and barrel finishing techniques that larger operations wouldn’t risk. The location itself is part of the appeal: it’s in an actual working neighborhood, not a tourist district, which gives it an authentic feel that’s harder to find in more established distillery destinations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Talk to the Guys Actually Making Your Drink

Tours are intimate affairs, usually led by one of the founders, and feel more like being invited into someone’s workshop than a formal presentation. You’ll walk through the entire production process, from grain to glass, in a space where everything is visible and accessible. The smell of fermenting mash and aging spirits fills the air, and you can actually touch the equipment they use daily. Tastings happen at a simple bar setup where they’ll pour their current releases and often something experimental they’re working on. The whole experience takes about 45 minutes and feels conversational rather than scripted.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Skip the Tourist Traps Find the Real Thing

If you’re looking for a polished distillery experience with gift shops and fancy tasting rooms, this isn’t it. But if you want to see craft distilling in its purest form and talk to people who are genuinely passionate about what they’re making, Otto delivers. It’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the process and taste products that aren’t available everywhere. The intimate scale means you’ll learn things you wouldn’t at larger operations, though you should expect a working distillery atmosphere rather than a tourist attraction.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule a visit—they don’t have set tour times and work around production schedules. The location can be tricky to find since it’s in an industrial area, so use GPS and look for the small Otto sign on the building. Weekday visits often work better since weekends can get busy with events. Ask about their experimental batches if you’re interested in tasting something unique. Parking is available on the street, but it’s a city neighborhood so pay attention to signs. Don’t expect a full bar experience—this is primarily a production facility with tasting capabilities.
