ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Boston's Post-Prohibition Pioneer Making Spirits Downtown

GrandTen Distilling sits in Boston’s South End at 383 Dorchester Avenue, housed in a converted industrial space that feels more like a neighborhood hangout than your typical distillery. Founded in 2011 by Spencer McMinn, a former finance guy who traded spreadsheets for stills, this operation started as Boston’s first distillery since Prohibition ended. McMinn partnered with master distiller Matt Nuernberger, who brought serious chops from studying distillation in Germany and working at craft operations across New England. They focus on gin, vodka, and liqueurs, with their Wire Works gin becoming their flagship before they’d even figured out what they were doing. The 4,000-square-foot space houses custom German copper stills and feels like the kind of place where regulars know the bartender’s name. You’ll find them making spirits that actually taste like Boston—not in some gimmicky way, but because they source locally and aren’t trying to copy Kentucky bourbon or craft the world’s smoothest vodka. Instead, they’re making stuff that works in cocktails and doesn’t need a marketing story to justify its existence.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Seasonal Botanicals in Every Gin Batch

These guys were Boston’s first distillery to open post-Prohibition, which means they had zero roadmap and had to convince city officials that yes, people could actually make liquor within city limits without burning the neighborhood down. Their approach to gin breaks from the juniper-heavy London Dry tradition—Wire Works uses a blend of botanicals that includes locally foraged ingredients and changes slightly with the seasons. They’re also one of the few distilleries that focuses heavily on liqueurs, making everything from a Fire Puncher cinnamon whiskey to Amandine almond liqueur that bartenders across the city actually use in cocktails instead of letting bottles collect dust.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Industrial Space That Feels Like Home

Walking into GrandTen feels like stepping into someone’s well-appointed garage project that somehow became a real business. The tasting room overlooks the production floor through large windows, so you can watch the stills doing their thing while you sample spirits. Tours are intimate—usually just a handful of people—and Matt or one of the other distillers walks you through their setup, explaining why they chose specific equipment and how their process differs from bigger operations. The cocktail program is serious here, with bartenders who know the spirits inside and out because they work ten feet from where they’re made. You’re not getting a scripted presentation; you’re getting the real story from people who smell like grain and copper at the end of the day.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Cocktail Lovers Absolutely Essential

If you’re looking for bourbon tastings and gift shop browsing, this isn’t your spot. GrandTen works best for people who actually drink cocktails and want to understand what goes into making the base spirits. The gin alone is worth the trip—it’s complex enough to sip neat but designed for mixing, and you’ll leave understanding why bartenders get excited about local distilleries. This is definitely more of an urban craft experience than a pastoral distillery visit, which means it fits into a Boston bar crawl better than a weekend countryside tour. You’ll learn something here, and the spirits are good enough that you’ll actually want to take a bottle home.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website for tasting hours since they’re not always open for visitors—this is a working distillery first, tourist destination second. The location can be tricky to find if you’re not familiar with the South End, so give yourself extra time and look for the industrial building rather than a fancy distillery sign. If you’re driving, street parking is available but can be tight on weekends. Ask about their seasonal botanical sourcing when you visit—they’re genuinely nerdy about ingredients and love talking about what they’re experimenting with. Try the Wire Works gin in a cocktail rather than neat to really understand what they’re going for.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GrandTen Distilling — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tastings?
Yes, you should call ahead or check their website to confirm tasting room hours and availability. They’re a working distillery first, so visitor hours can vary based on production schedules.
What’s the difference between their gin and traditional London Dry?
Wire Works uses a more balanced botanical blend with less juniper dominance than London Dry gins. They also incorporate some locally sourced botanicals that change seasonally, giving it a distinctly New England character.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Yes, they sell their full lineup of spirits on-site. You’ll find their gin, vodka, and liqueurs available for purchase, often including bottles that might be harder to find at regular liquor stores.
