Dismal Harmony Distilling sits on Morris Street in downtown Morristown, New Jersey, in a converted industrial space that owner and founder Joe Salinas transformed into his craft distillery operation. Salinas, who previously worked in the hospitality industry, opened the distillery in 2018 with a focus on small-batch spirits and creating a community gathering space. The operation produces vodka, gin, rum, and whiskey, with much of their early success built around their handcrafted gin and vodka offerings that quickly gained a local following.
The journey to opening wasn’t straightforward for Salinas, who spent considerable time navigating New Jersey’s complex distillery licensing requirements and converting the former warehouse space into a functional production facility. He handles much of the distillation work himself on a custom copper still system, maintaining tight control over every aspect of production from grain to bottle. The philosophy centers on quality over quantity, with Salinas preferring to perfect smaller batches rather than scale up quickly.
Visitors find themselves in an intimate setting where they can watch the distillation process up close and talk directly with Salinas about his craft. The tasting room maintains the industrial feel of the original building while creating a welcoming atmosphere for both spirit enthusiasts and curious newcomers. What sets this place apart is the hands-on approach – you’re not getting a corporate tour here, but rather a genuine conversation with someone passionate about the craft of distilling.
