ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

DC's First Distillery Since Prohibition Ended

Cotton & Reed sits in a converted warehouse on 5th Street NE in Washington DC’s NoMa neighborhood, founded by Reed Walker and Jordan Cotton in 2014. These two Georgetown Law grads ditched their legal careers to chase a rum-making dream, opening DC’s first distillery since Prohibition ended. The 6,000-square-foot space houses custom copper stills from Forsyths in Scotland, where they focus exclusively on rum production using Louisiana sugarcane and blackstrap molasses. Walker and Cotton spent years researching rum traditions across the Caribbean before settling on their approach, combining traditional pot still methods with modern fermentation techniques. The distillery officially opened its doors to visitors in 2016, bringing rum production back to a city that once thrived on spirits before the dry years shut everything down. You’ll find them in an industrial building that fits the neighborhood’s mix of old DC grit and new development, with concrete floors, exposed brick, and the sweet smell of molasses fermentation filling the air.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Caribbean Pot Stills In America's Capital

They’re DC’s only rum distillery and one of the few in America using traditional Caribbean pot still methods combined with column distillation. Walker and Cotton source their sugarcane exclusively from Louisiana and use blackstrap molasses alongside fresh cane juice, creating rums with more complexity than most American operations. Their fermentation process uses both commercial and wild yeasts, and they age everything in new American oak and used bourbon barrels. The legal background shows in their meticulous record-keeping and approach to the regulatory maze of distilling, but the real differentiator is their commitment to rum in a whiskey-obsessed craft distilling landscape.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Industrial Warehouse Real Production Floor

Tours run on weekends and take you through their production process from fermentation tanks to their Scottish copper stills. You’ll see the mash room where they mix sugarcane with water and yeast, then move to the distillation area where Reed or Jordan often lead tours themselves when they’re around. The tasting room sits adjacent to the production floor, so you can smell the fermentation while sampling their white and aged rums. The space feels like an actual working distillery rather than a polished tasting room, with industrial lighting and the constant hum of production equipment. Tastings include their signature spiced rum and whatever barrel-aged expressions they have ready.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Rum Worth the NoMa Warehouse Hunt

If you’re into rum or curious about spirits beyond whiskey, absolutely. Cotton & Reed offers something different in DC’s drinking scene, and the founders’ story from law to rum-making is genuinely interesting. The tours feel authentic because you’re seeing real production, not a show distillery. That said, if you’re expecting a whiskey experience or polished tourist attraction, this might not hit the mark. It’s better for spirits enthusiasts who want to learn about rum production and taste products you can’t find everywhere else. The neighborhood isn’t tourist central, so you’re coming specifically for the distillery experience.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book tours online through their website since weekend slots fill up, especially during warmer months. The NoMa location can be tricky to find, so use the exact address in GPS and look for the industrial building with their small sign. Street parking is usually available on weekends, but check signs carefully since some areas have restrictions. Ask about their barrel aging program if you’re interested in how they develop flavors over time. Don’t expect a full restaurant or extensive cocktail menu, this is primarily a production facility with tastings. The Metro’s NoMa-Gallaudet station is walkable if you’re coming from downtown.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Cotton & Reed — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes, tours typically run on weekends and spots fill up, especially during spring and summer months. Book through their website or call ahead to guarantee your spot.
What’s the difference between their white and aged rums?
The white rum is unaged and shows pure sugarcane and molasses flavors with slight funk from fermentation. Their aged expressions spend time in bourbon barrels, adding vanilla, caramel, and oak complexity to the rum base.
Is parking available near the distillery?
Street parking is usually available on weekends in the NoMa area, but check signs for restrictions. The neighborhood is also accessible via Metro’s NoMa-Gallaudet station if you prefer public transit.
