ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Virginia Beach Vodka From Navy Precision

Beach Vodka sits right on Virginia Beach’s Oceana Boulevard, making it one of the few distilleries you can literally walk to from the sand. Founded by husband-and-wife team Mike and Lisa Ravenscroft in 2013, this small-batch operation grew out of their shared frustration with overly processed vodkas that masked rather than celebrated the spirit’s potential. Mike, a former Navy pilot who spent years stationed at nearby Oceana Naval Air Station, partnered with Lisa, who brought bartending and hospitality experience from high-end Virginia Beach restaurants. They opened their doors in a modest suite that’s part distillery, part tasting room, focusing exclusively on premium vodka production. What started as weekend farmers market sales has evolved into a destination that draws both beach tourists and serious vodka enthusiasts. The Ravenscroffs use a custom-built 100-gallon copper still and take their time with each batch—they’re producing maybe 200 bottles a week when they’re running full tilt. The space feels more like visiting someone’s passionate hobby workshop than a corporate facility, which is exactly what Mike and Lisa were going for.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Blocks from the Beach Real Ocean Connection

Beach Vodka is one of the few distilleries in Virginia focusing exclusively on vodka, and their location just blocks from the Atlantic Ocean gives them a legitimate beach connection that’s not just marketing. Mike and Lisa distill in small batches using Virginia-grown corn and a proprietary filtration process they developed over two years of experimentation. They run everything through charcoal filtration followed by a secondary process using locally sourced materials—they won’t reveal exactly what, but locals suspect it involves something from the Chesapeake Bay region. The real differentiator is their obsessive attention to each batch; they taste and approve every single one personally, and if it doesn’t meet their standards, they redistill it rather than bottle subpar vodka.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Corporate Polish Just Pure Craft

You’ll walk into what feels like a friend’s garage workshop that happens to make exceptional vodka—copper still gleaming in the corner, bottles lined up on simple shelving, and usually either Mike or Lisa behind a small bar ready to talk process and pour samples. The tasting experience is intimate, often just you and a few other visitors, with whoever’s working explaining their distillation philosophy while you try three or four expressions. The space smells faintly of grain and ethanol, and you can hear the ocean if the windows are open on quiet days. They’ll walk you through their filtration process if you’re interested, and Mike especially loves talking about the chemistry behind what makes vodka smooth versus harsh.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Detour From the Boardwalk

If you’re a vodka drinker who cares about craft and process, absolutely. This isn’t a flashy tourist attraction—it’s a genuine small operation run by people who obsess over their product. You’ll leave understanding more about vodka production than you knew going in, and their bottles make excellent gifts or personal stock if you appreciate clean, smooth vodka. Beach tourists looking for a quick Instagram stop might find it underwhelming since it’s more about substance than spectacle. The intimate setting means you get personal attention and can ask detailed questions, but don’t expect elaborate tours or fancy amenities.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting—they’re often at farmers markets or events, and the small operation means irregular hours. Parking can be tricky during peak beach season, so arrive early or be prepared to walk a few blocks. Ask Mike about his Navy background and how it influenced their precision approach to distilling. If Lisa’s working the tasting room, she’ll give you excellent cocktail suggestions for their vodkas. Don’t expect a long tour since the operation is compact, but do expect to learn something new about vodka production. They often have seasonal or experimental batches available that aren’t on their regular lineup.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Beach Vodka — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tastings?
No reservations required, but calling ahead is smart since Mike and Lisa sometimes close to attend farmers markets or events. Their schedule can be irregular during beach season.
What makes Beach Vodka different from other vodkas?
They use Virginia-grown corn and a proprietary dual filtration process that Mike and Lisa developed over two years. Every batch is personally tasted and approved, with subpar batches redistilled rather than bottled.
Can I buy bottles to take home?
Yes, they sell bottles on-site including their flagship expressions and sometimes seasonal or experimental batches. Prices reflect the small-batch, craft production process.
