Dented Brick Distillery sits in South Salt Lake, Utah, founded by Brad Smoot, a former firefighter who traded his helmet for a still in 2012. The name comes from the literal dented brick he found during construction of their facility on South Washington Street, which seemed like the perfect metaphor for creating something beautiful from imperfection. Smoot started the operation after years of home brewing and distilling, eventually convincing his wife and business partner that Utah needed more craft spirits beyond the big brands.
The journey wasn’t exactly smooth sailing in a state known for strict liquor laws. Smoot had to navigate Utah’s complex regulations while building out a 3,000-square-foot facility that houses their custom copper still and aging room. The distillery focuses on small-batch vodka, gin, and whiskey, with Smoot handling most of the production himself alongside a small team. Their approach centers on using local ingredients when possible and creating spirits that reflect Utah’s unique character.
Visitors find a no-nonsense operation where you can actually talk to the people making your drinks. The tasting room has that working distillery feel – you’re not in some polished corporate facility, but rather a place where spirits are actually made daily. Smoot often runs tastings himself, explaining everything from grain selection to the quirks of distilling in Utah’s dry climate. It’s the kind of place where you leave understanding more about the craft and probably planning your next visit.
