ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Mountain Spirits Made Above 7,000 Feet

Alpine Distilling sits on Silver Creek Road in Park City, Utah, occupying a 7,000-square-foot facility that founder Ryan Call opened in 2010. Call, a former restaurant owner who caught the distilling bug during a trip to Scotland, decided Park City’s mountain location and water quality made it perfect for craft spirits production. The distillery specializes in whiskey, gin, and vodka, all made using locally-sourced Utah grains and the region’s pristine mountain water. Call brought in master distiller Tyler Haws, who’d cut his teeth at regional craft operations before joining Alpine’s team. Their copper pot stills can produce about 2,000 bottles per week, keeping production small but consistent. The operation grew from Call’s vision of creating spirits that captured Utah’s mountain terroir, and after more than a decade, they’ve built a solid reputation among local whiskey enthusiasts. You’ll find their bottles throughout Utah and in select markets across the Mountain West.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

High Altitude Aging Changes Everything

Alpine’s elevation sets them apart from most American distilleries—at over 7,000 feet above sea level, they’re aging spirits in conditions that create faster extraction from barrels due to the altitude and temperature swings. The mountain climate means their whiskey experiences dramatic daily temperature variations that speed up the aging process, giving their spirits more complexity in less time than distilleries at lower elevations. They source all their grains from Utah farms within a 100-mile radius and use water from local mountain springs, creating what they call a true ‘mountain terroir’ in their spirits.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Distillery With Mountain Views

Tours happen on weekends and give you a solid look at their copper pot stills and barrel aging room, where you can see how the altitude affects their whiskey maturation. Tyler or one of his assistants walks you through the grain-to-glass process, explaining how mountain conditions impact fermentation and aging. The tasting room feels like a modern mountain lodge—lots of reclaimed wood and large windows showing off the Wasatch Range. Tastings include their core lineup of whiskey, gin, and vodka, and the staff knows their stuff when it comes to explaining how elevation changes the distilling game.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Solid Craft Operation Worth the Stop

If you’re interested in how geography affects spirits and you’re already in Park City, it’s worth the stop. Alpine isn’t going to blow you away with massive production facilities or celebrity master distillers, but they’re doing solid work with an interesting mountain twist. Whiskey geeks will appreciate learning about high-altitude aging, and the Park City location makes it easy to combine with other activities in the area. Don’t expect a polished tourist experience like you’d get at major Kentucky distilleries—this feels more like visiting a working craft operation that happens to offer tours.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm tour times since they’re not daily, and weekend slots fill up during ski season and summer tourist months. The Silver Creek Road location can be tricky to find—look for the industrial building with Alpine signage rather than expecting a fancy distillery campus. Tours run about 45 minutes and cost around $15, including tastings. Ask specifically about their high-altitude aging process if you want to geek out on the technical side. Parking is straightforward in their lot, and you can buy bottles on-site if something catches your attention during the tasting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Alpine Distilling — Visitor FAQ

How does the high altitude affect your whiskey aging?
At over 7,000 feet, we get dramatic daily temperature swings that cause the barrels to expand and contract more than at lower elevations. This pushes the whiskey deeper into the wood and pulls out more flavor compounds faster, so our whiskey develops complexity in less time than it would at sea level.
Do you offer tours year-round?
Tours are available on weekends throughout the year, but we recommend calling ahead to confirm availability and make reservations. During Park City’s busy ski season and summer months, tours can book up quickly.
Where do you source your grains?
All our grains come from Utah farms within 100 miles of the distillery. We work directly with local farmers to get the wheat, corn, and other grains we need, keeping everything as local as possible to create a true Utah mountain spirit.
