ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Garage Hobby That Became Their Life's Work

4 Spirits Distillery sits in an industrial area of Corvallis, Oregon, where founders Steve and Kathy Hale decided to turn their passion for craft spirits into a small-batch operation. The husband-and-wife team opened their doors in 2014 after Steve, a former engineer, spent years perfecting recipes in their garage. The distillery operates out of a converted warehouse space on Deschutes Street, where they focus on producing vodka, gin, whiskey, and seasonal liqueurs using Pacific Northwest ingredients. The Hales handle most operations themselves, from mashing and distilling to bottling and labeling, keeping things deliberately small-scale. Their 250-gallon copper still dominates the production floor, and you’ll often find Steve explaining the intricacies of their grain-to-glass process to visitors. The tasting room feels more like visiting friends than a commercial operation – casual seating, local art on the walls, and bottles lined up behind a simple bar where Kathy often serves tastings herself. They’ve built a reputation locally for their smooth vodka and botanical-forward gin, with whiskey aging in barrels stacked along the warehouse walls for future releases.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

True Grain to Glass In the Same Building

4 Spirits stands out as one of the few true grain-to-glass operations in the mid-Willamette Valley, with Steve and Kathy handling every step from sourcing local grains to hand-labeling bottles. Their engineering background shows in their methodical approach to distillation – Steve built custom equipment to achieve precise temperature control and developed detailed logs tracking every variable in their process. They source wheat from farms within 50 miles and use Oregon-grown botanicals in their gin, including juniper they forage themselves from the Cascade foothills. The scale stays intentionally tiny, producing maybe 20 cases per week, which means each batch gets personal attention most larger operations can’t match.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers In Their Workshop

Tastings happen right in the production space, where you’ll sit at high-top tables surrounded by fermentation tanks and the gleaming copper still. Steve or Kathy walk you through their lineup, usually starting with their clean wheat vodka and moving through their gin with its prominent juniper and citrus notes. The atmosphere stays relaxed and educational – they’re genuinely excited to explain how they achieve different flavor profiles and will often pull out their recipe notebooks to show you their development process. The space smells like fresh grain and botanicals, and you can watch them work if you visit during production hours.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

For Spirit Geeks An Essential Stop

This appeals most to spirits enthusiasts who appreciate small-batch craftsmanship and want to meet the actual distillers behind their bottles. You’ll learn more about the technical side of distillation here than at most larger operations, and the Hales’ genuine passion comes through in every conversation. It’s not fancy or polished – you’re essentially visiting their workshop – but that authenticity makes it memorable. If you prefer elaborate tasting rooms or extensive food menus, this might feel too bare-bones. The focus stays squarely on the spirits and the craft behind them.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead since they don’t keep regular tasting room hours and often close for production work or farmers market events. Steve and Kathy frequently travel to sell at regional markets, so checking their Facebook page before driving over saves disappointment. The location can be tricky to find in the industrial area – look for their small sign on the warehouse building. Parking is easy in their lot. Ask about their barrel aging program if you’re interested in whiskey, and don’t miss trying their seasonal fruit liqueurs if available. They’re always happy to explain their equipment, so speak up if you’re curious about the technical aspects.
