ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Central Avenue Warehouse Turned Craft Distillery

Albuquerque Distilling sits in a converted warehouse space on Central Avenue, bringing craft spirits to New Mexico’s largest city since 2016. Founded by husband-and-wife team Jerry and Melanie DeVore, the distillery emerged from Jerry’s engineering background and Melanie’s business acumen, transforming their shared passion for quality spirits into a full-scale operation. The 5,000-square-foot facility houses copper stills and fermentation tanks where they produce vodka, gin, and whiskey using traditional methods with a southwestern twist. The DeVores spent two years navigating regulations and perfecting their recipes before opening their doors, determined to create something authentic in a state not traditionally known for distilling. Jerry handles the production side, drawing on his technical expertise to dial in their processes, while Melanie manages the business operations and visitor experience. Their approach focuses on small-batch production using quality ingredients, including New Mexican wheat and corn when possible. Visitors find a working distillery with an attached tasting room that feels more like a neighborhood bar than a tourist destination. The space showcases the production equipment through large windows, and the tasting room offers flights of their spirits alongside cocktails crafted with their products. Tours run on weekends and provide an up-close look at their grain-to-glass process, with Jerry or other team members explaining everything from mashing to bottling.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

High Desert Terroir In Every Bottle

Albuquerque Distilling stands as one of the few craft distilleries in New Mexico, operating in a state where distilling regulations were only recently modernized to support small producers. The DeVores incorporate New Mexican ingredients when possible, including local wheat and corn, giving their spirits a connection to the high desert terroir. Their location on historic Route 66 adds character, and the warehouse setting provides an authentic industrial feel that contrasts with more polished distillery experiences. The husband-and-wife operation maintains a genuinely personal touch, with Jerry often leading tours himself and sharing technical details about their custom-built copper still system.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Jerry Leads Tours Shows Every Still

You’ll walk into a spacious tasting room where large windows reveal the production floor with gleaming copper stills and fermentation tanks. The atmosphere feels relaxed and unpretentious, more neighborhood distillery than tourist attraction. Weekend tours take you through the entire process, from grain delivery to bottling, with Jerry or another team member explaining the science behind fermentation and distillation. Tastings include flights of their vodka, gin, and available whiskey expressions, served neat with water backs so you can appreciate the subtle differences in their products. The staff knows their spirits well and can explain the production nuances that create each flavor profile.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Distilling Without Tourist Crowds

This appeals most to spirits enthusiasts curious about the technical side of distilling and folks interested in supporting local craft producers. You’ll get an authentic, educational experience without the crowds or corporate feel of larger operations. The tours provide genuine insight into small-batch production, and Jerry’s engineering background means you’ll learn about the science behind the process. Don’t expect elaborate packaging or a massive selection of aged whiskeys – they’re still building inventory on the brown spirits side. It’s better for understanding craft distilling than for rare bottle hunting, and the personal interaction with the founders makes it feel special.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media for current hours and tour availability, as they sometimes adjust schedules for production needs. The distillery sits on Central Avenue with decent parking, though the industrial area can feel a bit sparse on evenings and weekends. Weekend tours offer the best experience since Jerry often leads them personally and you can see more of the production process. Try their gin if you’re not typically a gin drinker – the southwestern botanicals create something different from London Dry styles. Ask about their whiskey aging program if you’re curious about their timeline for releasing more mature expressions.
