ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Working Ranch That Makes Its Own Spirits

Chankaska Creek Ranch sits on a sprawling property along the Minnesota River Valley near Kasota, about an hour southwest of Minneapolis. Dave and Darlene Rohrer founded this operation in 1999, starting as a vineyard and winery before expanding into distilling in 2010. The couple transformed their 240-acre ranch into a full agricultural destination, complete with vineyards, grain production, and eventually a craft distillery housed in rustic farm buildings that blend into the rolling countryside. Dave brought decades of farming experience to the venture, while Darlene handled the business side and hospitality aspects. They decided to add distilling after realizing they could grow their own corn and other grains on the property, creating a true farm-to-bottle operation. The distillery uses copper pot stills and focuses on traditional methods, with much of their grain coming directly from fields you can see from the tasting room windows. Visitors get a genuine ranch experience here – you’re not just touring a production facility, but exploring a working farm where the Rohrers have built something that connects the land to the glass. The tasting room overlooks the vineyards and distillery operations, and you’ll often see Dave or other family members around the property. They produce vodka, gin, whiskey, and seasonal spirits alongside their wines, making this one of Minnesota’s more comprehensive agricultural beverage operations.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Grain to Glass From the Same Field

What sets Chankaska apart is the complete farm-to-bottle integration – they’re actually growing the corn, wheat, and other grains used in their spirits on the same property where you’re tasting them. Most craft distilleries source their grains from suppliers, but here you can literally see the fields where your vodka started as corn. The ranch setting is genuinely rural, not manufactured rustic charm, and the Rohrer family’s three-decade commitment to the land shows in everything from soil management to the old-school farming equipment scattered around the property. They’re also one of the few operations in Minnesota combining serious winemaking with craft distilling under one roof.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Not Corporate Craft Real Farm Experience

You’ll taste in a converted farm building that feels authentically agricultural – wooden beams, views of the working ranch, and that slightly sweet smell of fermenting grains mixing with Minnesota farmland air. The Rohrers or their staff lead tastings that often turn into conversations about farming, weather, and the challenges of growing everything on-site. Tours include walking through both the vineyard and distillery areas, so you get the full agricultural picture. The pace is relaxed and educational rather than rushed, and you’ll likely learn as much about sustainable farming as you will about distilling techniques.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Drive Into Real Minnesota

This place appeals most to people who appreciate the agricultural side of spirits and want to understand the farm-to-bottle story firsthand. If you’re looking for polished urban distillery experiences or cutting-edge cocktail programs, this isn’t that. But if you want to taste spirits made from grains grown in soil you can walk on, while talking to the farmers who actually grew them, Chankaska delivers something most distilleries can’t. Wine lovers will appreciate the dual focus, and it’s genuinely educational for anyone curious about where their spirits actually come from before the marketing gets involved.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead since they’re still primarily a working farm and hours can vary with seasonal agricultural demands. The drive from the Twin Cities takes about an hour, and GPS works fine, but you’ll know you’re close when the landscape opens up into serious farmland. Spring through fall offers the best experience when you can see the crops growing, though winter tastings have their own cozy appeal. Ask about their grain-growing process – the Rohrers genuinely enjoy talking about the agricultural side that most visitors never think about. Don’t expect a huge selection of aged spirits since they’re still relatively new to distilling, but their younger products show real promise and reflect the terroir of southern Minnesota.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Chankaska Creek Ranch, Winery, & Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do you really grow all the grains used in your spirits on the property?
Yes, the majority of their corn and other grains come from their own 240-acre ranch. You can actually see the fields where the ingredients were grown from the tasting room, making this a true farm-to-bottle operation rather than just a marketing claim.
Can I tour both the winery and distillery in one visit?
Absolutely – since both operations are on the same property, tours typically include both the vineyard and distillery areas. You’ll get to see how they apply the same agricultural principles to both wine grapes and distilling grains.
How far is it from Minneapolis and is it easy to find?
It’s about an hour southwest of Minneapolis near Kasota, and GPS directions work fine. You’ll drive through increasingly rural farmland, so you’ll know you’re headed in the right direction when the agricultural landscape opens up around you.
