ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Working Farm That Happens to Make Spirits

Far North Spirits sits on a farm in Hallock, Minnesota, right at the Canadian border, making it literally one of the northernmost distilleries in the continental United States. Founded in 2014 by Michael Swanson, a former agricultural consultant, the distillery grows all its own grains on the family farm that’s been in operation since the 1920s. What started as a way to add value to their grain crops turned into a full-scale craft distillery that produces bourbon, rye, and gin using 100% estate-grown ingredients. The operation runs out of a converted grain storage facility on the 600-acre farm, where three generations of Swansons now work together to manage both the agricultural and distilling sides of the business. They’re literally farm-to-bottle, harvesting corn, wheat, and rye from fields you can see from the tasting room windows. The whole setup feels more like visiting a working farm that happens to make excellent spirits rather than a traditional distillery experience.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Grain to Glass From the Same Field

This is genuinely the only distillery in North America where you can watch grain being harvested from the same fields where your bottle originated. The Swansons control every step from seed selection through bottling, growing heritage varieties of corn and rye specifically chosen for flavor rather than yield. Their location just 3 miles from Canada means harsh winters that actually benefit their aging process, with extreme temperature swings creating more interaction between spirits and oak. They’re also one of the few distilleries using a wood-fired still, burning wood from their own property to heat their copper pot still. The agricultural focus means they operate on harvest cycles rather than typical distillery schedules, so production varies seasonally based on what’s coming off the fields.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Farmer Who Grew Your Bourbon

You’ll meet Michael or one of his sons who actually grew the grain in your glass, which gives tastings a personal touch you won’t find elsewhere. The tasting room overlooks the production floor and grain storage, so you can see the entire process from raw materials to finished product. Tours include walking through the grain bins, seeing the milling operation, and understanding how farming decisions directly impact flavor profiles. The space itself is unpretentious – concrete floors, exposed beams, and the lingering smell of grain dust mixed with aging spirits. During harvest season, you might hear combines running in nearby fields while you’re tasting bourbon made from last year’s crop.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Drive To the Middle of Nowhere

If you’re interested in the agricultural side of spirits and want to understand how grain quality affects flavor, this is a unique experience you can’t replicate elsewhere. The personal connection to the farming family and the literal farm-to-bottle story makes it compelling for spirits enthusiasts who care about provenance. However, if you’re expecting polished facilities or extensive cocktail programs, you might be disappointed. This appeals most to people who appreciate the craft and agricultural aspects over flashy presentation. The remote location means it’s definitely a destination rather than a casual stop, but that isolation is part of what makes the experience authentic.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead rather than just showing up, as they sometimes close for harvest or fieldwork without much notice. GPS can be unreliable in this rural area, so get specific directions from them when you book. The best time to visit is late summer through fall when you can see the harvest in action and understand the complete cycle. Ask about their heritage grain varieties and how growing conditions affect flavor – Michael’s agricultural background makes these conversations fascinating. Bring cash for bottle purchases, as their payment processing can be spotty due to the remote location. Don’t expect cell service once you arrive, so plan accordingly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Far North Spirits — Visitor FAQ

Do you really grow all your own grain?
Yes, everything from corn to wheat to rye is grown on their 600-acre farm. They even select heritage grain varieties specifically for flavor rather than yield, which is unusual for commercial farming.
How far in advance should I book a visit?
Call at least a week ahead, especially during planting or harvest seasons when they might be too busy with farm work. They’re more flexible during winter months but still prefer advance notice.
What’s the best time of year to visit?
Late summer through fall lets you see the harvest process and understand how farming connects to distilling. Winter visits are more focused on the spirits themselves, while spring means you might see planting operations.
