ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Converted Furniture Store Making Real Whiskey

Ugly Dog Distillery sits on South Main Street in downtown Chelsea, Michigan, in a restored brick building that once housed a furniture store. Founded in 2014 by husband-and-wife team Chris and Jennifer Fredrickson, this craft distillery emerged from Chris’s background in engineering and Jennifer’s business acumen, combined with a shared passion for creating quality spirits. The 4,000-square-foot space houses their production equipment, tasting room, and retail area, where they produce bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, and gin using locally sourced grains when possible. The distillery takes its name from their beloved English bulldog, Murphy, whose likeness appears on their bottles and throughout the space. What started as a retirement dream for Chris became a full-scale operation that’s helped establish Chelsea as a craft spirits destination in southeastern Michigan. The Fredricksons built their business around small-batch production, focusing on hands-on craftsmanship rather than mass production. Their 250-gallon copper still, custom-made in Kentucky, allows them to maintain quality control while producing enough volume to distribute throughout Michigan and parts of Ohio. The distillery has become a cornerstone of Chelsea’s downtown revitalization, drawing visitors who appreciate both the craft and the community connection.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Engineering Meets Distilling In Small Batches

Ugly Dog stands out for its commitment to Michigan agriculture, sourcing corn and wheat from farms within 100 miles of the distillery whenever harvest conditions allow. Chris Fredrickson’s engineering background shows in their precise approach to fermentation and distillation, with detailed logs tracking every batch to ensure consistency. The distillery’s bourbon uses a high-rye mash bill that creates a spicier profile than many craft distilleries attempt, and they age their whiskey in 15-gallon barrels that provide more wood contact and faster maturation than standard 53-gallon barrels. Their gin recipe includes Michigan-grown juniper and locally foraged botanicals, creating a distinctly regional flavor profile. The intimate scale means visitors often meet Chris or Jennifer personally, and the tasting room’s casual atmosphere encourages conversation about the production process rather than formal presentations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers Behind the Copper Still

Walking into Ugly Dog feels like stepping into someone’s well-appointed garage workshop, with exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and the gleaming copper still visible from the tasting room. Chris or Jennifer often lead tastings themselves, explaining their production methods while pouring samples of their current lineup. The space smells like grain and oak, with the subtle sweetness of aging whiskey mixing with the botanical scents from gin production. Tastings typically include four spirits with detailed explanations of mash bills, aging processes, and flavor development. The atmosphere stays conversational rather than scripted, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions about everything from grain sourcing to barrel char levels. You’ll see the entire operation during your visit since production happens in the same building, and if you’re lucky enough to visit during distilling days, you can watch the process firsthand.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Pure Craft Spirit No Corporate Polish

If you’re interested in craft spirits and appreciate meeting the actual makers, Ugly Dog delivers an authentic experience without pretension. Whiskey enthusiasts will particularly enjoy tasting their high-rye bourbon and learning about their accelerated aging process with smaller barrels. The intimate setting means you’ll get personalized attention and genuine insights into craft distilling, making it ideal for spirit geeks who want to understand the process. However, if you’re looking for elaborate tours, fancy amenities, or a party atmosphere, you’ll find the experience more educational than entertaining. The downtown Chelsea location makes it easy to combine with other local attractions, and the reasonable tasting fees make it accessible for curious beginners. This is craft distilling at its most authentic, perfect for anyone who values quality and craftsmanship over flash and marketing.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before visiting, as hours can vary seasonally and they occasionally close for private events or production schedules. Parking is available on Main Street, but Chelsea’s downtown can get busy on weekends, so arrive early or be prepared to walk a block or two. Ask Chris about their barrel aging experiments if he’s pouring, and definitely try their bourbon if you enjoy rye-forward whiskeys. The gin showcases their botanical sourcing, so ask about the local ingredients they use. If you’re planning to buy bottles, they often have distillery-only releases not available elsewhere. Weekend afternoons tend to be busier, so weekday visits offer more one-on-one time with the owners. Don’t expect a polished corporate experience, this is craft distilling in its purest form, where the focus stays on the spirits rather than the spectacle.
