ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Maine Craft Pioneers Since Day One

Wiggly Bridge Distillery sits right on Route 1 in York, Maine, housed in a restored 19th-century building that once served the local community in entirely different ways. David Woods and Barry Nagle founded the distillery in 2013, bringing together Woods’s background in spirits and Nagle’s business acumen to create Maine’s craft distilling scene from the ground up. They named it after the historic Wiggly Bridge, a small pedestrian suspension bridge that’s become a local landmark just down the road. The operation focuses on small-batch vodka, gin, and seasonal spirits, with everything distilled on-site using a custom copper still system they installed themselves. What started as two friends with a shared vision has grown into a genuine destination where you can watch the entire process from grain to glass. The building itself tells a story—exposed beams, brick walls, and large windows that flood the production area with natural light. They’ve managed to keep that neighborhood feel while producing spirits that have gained recognition throughout New England.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Local Botanicals Meet Custom Copper Stills

This is one of Maine’s pioneering craft distilleries, opening when the state’s distilling laws were still evolving and helping to shape what became a thriving scene. Woods and Nagle didn’t just jump into distilling—they spent years researching, traveling to established distilleries, and learning from master distillers before firing up their first batch. Their approach focuses heavily on local ingredients when possible, and they’ve developed relationships with Maine farmers for seasonal botanicals that show up in limited releases. The location on Route 1 means you’re hitting a working distillery that locals actually visit regularly, not just a tourist stop. They’ve also maintained their original small-batch approach even as demand has grown, choosing to expand slowly rather than scale up production dramatically.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Watch Them Work Right There

You’ll walk into a space that feels more like a working craft workshop than a polished tasting room, which is exactly the point. The production area is right there—you can see the still, fermentation tanks, and bottling operation all in one space. David or Barry often lead tastings themselves, and they’re genuinely enthusiastic about explaining their process and the stories behind each spirit. The tasting experience is intimate, usually just a few people at a time around a small bar area where you can try their core lineup and whatever seasonal experiments they’re working on. The whole thing feels conversational rather than scripted, and you’ll probably leave knowing more about Maine’s craft spirits scene than you expected.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect Route 1 Discovery Stop

If you’re driving Route 1 and appreciate genuine craft operations, definitely stop in. This isn’t a destination you’d plan a whole trip around, but it’s exactly the kind of authentic local business that makes road trips memorable. Their vodka is clean and well-made, and the seasonal gins show real creativity with botanicals. It appeals most to people who enjoy meeting the actual makers and understanding the process—you won’t find flashy marketing or elaborate tours, just solid spirits and good conversation. The experience works best for adults who can appreciate the craft without needing entertainment beyond the spirits themselves.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before driving over—they’re a small operation and hours can vary, especially during Maine’s off-season. Parking is easy right in front of the building on Route 1. If you’re genuinely interested in distilling, ask about their process and equipment—both David and Barry are happy to talk shop if they’re not swamped. Try whatever seasonal release they have available, as these often showcase their most creative work. The location makes it an easy stop if you’re already exploring York or heading up the coast, but it’s probably not worth a special trip unless you’re specifically seeking out Maine craft distilleries.
