ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Where Mountains Meet Bay And Maine Spirits Come Alive

Barren’s Distillery + Restaurant sits on Wayfarer Drive in Camden, Maine, where the mountains meet Penobscot Bay. Founded by Travis and Hallie Hutchins in 2019, this operation combines craft distilling with a full restaurant in a modern facility that feels more like a mountain lodge than your typical distillery. Travis came from a background in renewable energy while Hallie brought restaurant management experience, and together they wanted to create something that showcased Maine’s natural ingredients alongside locally-sourced food. They produce vodka, gin, and seasonal spirits using Maine potatoes and botanicals, with plans to age whiskey as their operation matures. The 4,000-square-foot space houses both the distillery operations and a 60-seat restaurant that sources ingredients from local farms and fishermen. You’re not just visiting a distillery here—you’re experiencing what they call ‘Maine terroir’ through both spirits and food.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Foraged Botanicals and Potato Vodka Taste Like Coastal Maine

This is one of the few distillery-restaurant combinations in Maine where both operations were designed together from the ground up rather than adding food as an afterthought. They’re using Maine-grown potatoes from local farms for their vodka base and foraging wild botanicals like juniper and sea beans for their gin, creating spirits that genuinely taste like coastal Maine. The restaurant isn’t serving typical pub food—they’re doing things like locally-caught scallops and farm-raised pork, paired specifically with their house spirits. Travis and Hallie also designed the facility with floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase the distilling equipment as part of the dining experience, so you can watch production while eating.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Not Your Typical Tasting Room Full Restaurant Experience

You’ll walk into a space that feels like an upscale mountain lodge with exposed beams, stone accents, and those big windows looking into the production area. The tasting experience happens at the bar where you can sample their vodka and gin while watching the copper still in action. If you’re dining, the servers know the spirits well and can recommend pairings with menu items that actually make sense. The atmosphere is relaxed but polished—think date night rather than rowdy tasting room. You can see the entire production setup from most seats in the restaurant, and on busy days, Travis or Hallie often circulate to talk about their process and ingredients.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect Date Night Spot For Spirit Lovers

If you want the typical bourbon distillery experience, this isn’t it—but that’s exactly what makes it interesting. This appeals to people who like craft cocktails, farm-to-table dining, and spirits that taste different from what you’ll find elsewhere. The food is genuinely good, not just distillery food, and the spirits show real character from their local ingredients. It’s perfect for couples or small groups who want to combine a nice dinner with learning about spirits. Just know you’re paying restaurant prices for both food and drinks, so this isn’t a budget-friendly tasting room stop.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Make dinner reservations through their website, especially for weekend evenings—they fill up with locals, not just tourists. If you just want to taste spirits, the bar usually has space for walk-ins during off-peak hours, but call ahead during summer months when Camden gets crowded. Ask specifically about their seasonal botanicals if you’re interested in gin—they change the recipe based on what they can forage. Try the potato vodka neat first before mixing it in cocktails to understand what Maine terroir actually tastes like. Parking can be tight during peak season, so arrive a few minutes early to find a spot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Barren’s Distillery + Restaurant — Visitor FAQ

Do I need reservations just for drinks, or only for dinner?
You definitely need reservations for dinner, especially on weekends. The bar usually takes walk-ins for just drinks and tastings, but it’s smart to call ahead during busy summer months since Camden gets packed with tourists.
What makes your spirits different from other craft distilleries?
They use Maine-grown potatoes for their vodka base and forage wild botanicals like juniper and sea beans for their gin. This creates flavors that actually taste like coastal Maine rather than generic craft spirits you could get anywhere.
Can I see the distilling process during my visit?
The production area is visible through floor-to-ceiling windows from both the bar and restaurant seating. While they don’t offer formal tours, you can watch the process and the owners often come around to explain what’s happening with the equipment.
