ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Downtown Mill Building Turned Craft Distillery

Round Turn Distilling sits in the heart of Biddeford’s downtown, occupying a compact space in a converted mill building on Main Street. Founded by husband-and-wife team Eric and Jen Michaud, this small-batch operation opened its doors in 2016 after Eric transitioned from a career in information technology to pursue his passion for craft distilling. The name “Round Turn” comes from Eric’s sailing background—it’s a nautical knot that’s both reliable and strong, which pretty much sums up their approach to making spirits. They focus primarily on whiskey, rum, and seasonal offerings, working with a 150-gallon copper pot still that allows them to maintain tight control over every batch. The space itself reflects the building’s industrial past, with exposed brick walls and high ceilings creating an intimate tasting room where you can watch the distillation process happen just steps away. Eric handles the production side while Jen manages the business operations, and their combined expertise shows in both the quality of their spirits and the welcoming atmosphere they’ve created. What started as Eric’s home distilling hobby has evolved into a respected local distillery that’s become a cornerstone of Biddeford’s growing craft beverage scene.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Maine Maple Meets Local Corn

Round Turn’s commitment to using Maine ingredients whenever possible sets them apart from larger operations. They source their corn from local farms and use Maine maple syrup in some of their seasonal expressions, creating spirits that genuinely reflect their location rather than just claiming to. Eric’s background in IT might seem unrelated to distilling, but his analytical approach to fermentation and distillation has resulted in remarkably consistent products despite their small scale. The distillery’s location in a former textile mill building adds character—you’re literally tasting spirits made in a space that helped build Maine’s industrial heritage. Their small 150-gallon still means they can’t compete on volume, but it allows them to experiment with different mash bills and aging techniques that larger distilleries can’t risk on their production schedules.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Eric and Jen Pour Your Tasting Personally

You’ll find yourself in an intimate setting where Eric or Jen often personally guide tastings, explaining their process and the stories behind each spirit. The tasting room overlooks the production area, so you can see the copper still and fermentation tanks while sampling their offerings. The atmosphere feels more like visiting friends who happen to make excellent whiskey than a formal distillery tour. Tastings typically include four to five pours, with detailed explanations of the mash bills, aging processes, and tasting notes. The space can accommodate small groups comfortably, but larger parties might feel cramped—this isn’t a destination for big bachelor parties or corporate events.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Small Batch Excellence Worth the Search

If you appreciate small-batch spirits and want to support local Maine producers, absolutely. Round Turn offers the kind of personal interaction with distillers that you won’t find at larger operations, and their products showcase genuine craftsmanship rather than mass production. The intimate setting makes this perfect for couples or small groups of friends who want to learn about distilling while tasting quality spirits. However, if you’re expecting elaborate tours, gift shops, or entertainment beyond great spirits and conversation, you might want to adjust your expectations. This is craft distilling at its most authentic—focused on the product and the people making it rather than creating an elaborate visitor experience.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting, as their hours can vary based on production schedules and seasonal demands. Parking can be tricky in downtown Biddeford, but there are public lots within a few blocks of the distillery. Ask Eric about his aging experiments—he’s always testing different barrel types and finishes that might not be available for purchase yet but could be included in tastings. If you’re interested in the technical aspects of distilling, he’s happy to discuss fermentation schedules, cut points, and other details that most visitors never hear about. Weekend visits tend to be busier, so weekday afternoon stops often allow for more detailed conversations about their process.
