ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Former Trolley Barn Turned Kansas Craft Distillery

Trolley House Distillery sits in a restored early 1900s building on Commercial Street in downtown Emporia, Kansas, where founders Chad and Jamie Hanson transformed a former trolley maintenance facility into one of Kansas’s most authentic craft distilleries. The Hansons opened their doors in 2018 after Chad, a former machinist, and Jamie, who worked in healthcare administration, decided to chase their shared passion for traditional American whiskey production. The 4,000-square-foot space maintains much of its industrial character with exposed brick walls, original hardwood floors, and vintage trolley memorabilia that nods to the building’s transportation heritage. They focus exclusively on bourbon and rye whiskey, using a 500-gallon copper pot still manufactured by Vendome Copper & Brass Works, the same company that built stills for some of Kentucky’s most legendary distilleries. The operation reflects Chad’s engineering background with precise temperature control systems and custom-built fermentation tanks that allow for consistent small-batch production. You’ll find them running a true grain-to-glass operation, sourcing corn from local Kansas farms within a 50-mile radius and handling every step from milling to bottling on-site. The Hansons didn’t just want to make whiskey – they wanted to bring authentic distilling back to Kansas, which had a rich pre-Prohibition distilling tradition that died out for nearly a century.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

100% Kansas Corn Grain to Glass

Trolley House stands out as one of only three grain-to-glass distilleries operating in Kansas, and they’re the only one using 100% Kansas-grown corn in their mash bills. Chad’s machinist background shows in their custom-engineered fermentation system that maintains precise temperature control throughout the process, something most craft distilleries struggle with in their early years. The building itself tells a story – this is where Emporia’s trolley cars were maintained and stored in the early 1900s, and you can still see the original rail tracks embedded in the concrete floor of the tasting room. They age their whiskey in 30-gallon barrels instead of the standard 53-gallon barrels used by larger distilleries, which accelerates the aging process and creates more wood contact per gallon of whiskey.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Chad and Jamie Lead Every Single Tour

Chad or Jamie personally lead most tours, walking you through their compact but efficient operation where you can see the entire whiskey-making process in one building. The smell hits you first – sweet corn mash and oak aging barrels create that classic distillery aroma that whiskey lovers recognize immediately. You’ll stand next to the copper still while it’s running and hear Chad explain how his engineering background influenced their precise approach to cuts and temperature control. The tasting happens at a custom-built bar made from reclaimed wood, where you can try their bourbon and rye neat or in simple cocktails that highlight the spirits. Jamie handles the hospitality side with genuine enthusiasm, sharing stories about convincing Emporia city officials to approve the distillery and the challenges of starting from scratch in a state with limited distilling history.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Whiskey No Tourist Script

This is perfect for serious whiskey enthusiasts who want to see authentic small-batch production without tourist crowds or scripted presentations. You’re not getting polished marketing here – you’re getting real insights into craft distilling from people who built this operation themselves. The intimate scale means you can ask detailed questions about their process and actually get technical answers. It’s not the place for large groups or people looking for flashy entertainment, but if you appreciate genuine craftsmanship and want to support true local production, Trolley House delivers something you can’t get at bigger operations. The whiskey itself holds up well against craft distilleries with much larger budgets and longer histories.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule a visit since Chad and Jamie often handle tours personally and their production schedule varies. Saturday afternoons tend to be the best time to catch them when they’re not actively distilling. Ask specifically about their barrel aging program – they’re experimenting with different char levels and local wood sources that create unique flavor profiles. Don’t expect fancy cocktail service, but do try their bourbon neat first to appreciate the craftsmanship before adding mixers. Parking is easy on Commercial Street, and you’re within walking distance of several local restaurants if you want to make it a longer downtown visit.
