ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Working Man Distillers sits in a converted industrial building on Carpenter Street in Pawtucket, bringing small-batch spirits to Rhode Island’s manufacturing heartland. Founded by lifelong friends who wanted to create something with their hands after careers in corporate America, they opened in 2018 with a focus on bourbon, rye, and gin. The distillery occupies a 3,000-square-foot space that feels more like a neighborhood workshop than a polished tourist destination, which is exactly what they were going for. The founders spent three years navigating Rhode Island’s complex liquor laws and converting their space before distilling their first batch. They installed a 500-gallon copper still and built their own fermentation tanks, doing most of the work themselves on weekends while keeping their day jobs. The master distiller learned his craft through trial, error, and a lot of late nights, developing recipes that reflect their blue-collar ethos. When you visit, you’re walking into an active production facility where the smell of grain mash mingles with sawdust and metal polish. The tasting room doubles as their office, and tours happen around whatever they’re working on that day. It’s not fancy, but it’s authentic – these guys are making spirits because they love the craft, not because they’re chasing the craft distillery trend.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Working Man stands out because they’re genuinely working-class guys who stumbled into distilling through curiosity rather than family tradition or business opportunity. They source their grain from New England farms when possible and age their whiskey in 15-gallon barrels instead of the standard 53-gallon ones, which accelerates the aging process and creates more wood contact. Their gin recipe includes botanicals foraged from Rhode Island, including beach rose hips and juniper they gather themselves. The operation runs on sweat equity – you’ll often see the founders doing everything from mashing grain to bottling spirits to mopping floors.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tours happen in the main production area where you can see their still, fermentation tanks, and barrel storage all in one room. One of the founders usually leads the tour himself, explaining their process while checking on whatever’s fermenting or distilling that day. The tasting happens at a simple bar they built from reclaimed wood, trying their current releases straight from the bottle. Don’t expect fancy glassware or printed tasting notes – they’ll pour samples in mason jars and tell you what they taste. The whole experience takes about 45 minutes and feels more like hanging out in a friend’s garage than a formal distillery tour.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you appreciate authenticity over polish, Working Man delivers something rare in the craft distillery world. You won’t find Instagram-worthy cocktails or elaborate gift shops, but you will meet people who genuinely love what they’re doing and aren’t afraid to show you the unglamorous side of making spirits. It’s perfect for whiskey nerds who want to see small-batch production up close, but might disappoint visitors expecting a refined tasting room experience. The spirits are solid, especially considering they’ve only been at this for a few years, and the prices reflect their no-frills approach.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead rather than just showing up – they’re often busy with production and can’t always accommodate walk-ins. Weekend afternoons work best since they’re usually distilling during the week. Parking is limited on Carpenter Street, so be prepared to walk a block or two. Ask about their barrel aging experiments if you’re interested in the technical side – they love talking about their process. Don’t expect cocktails or food, but they’ll let you buy bottles of whatever they have in stock. Bring cash since their card reader doesn’t always cooperate.
