About This Cocktail

Arnold Palmer, the golfer, ordered his signature half-iced-tea-half-lemonade at a country club somewhere in Pennsylvania in the 1960s, and a woman at the next table said she’d have what he was having, and that was apparently enough to name a drink after someone. It’s a good drink. It has always been a good drink. And at some point someone added bourbon to it, which made it a better drink.

The Bourbon Arnold Palmer is exactly what it sounds like — iced tea, lemonade, bourbon, over ice in a tall glass. It’s one of the most approachable summer drinks you can make, it scales up to a pitcher without any difficulty, and it pairs with everything from a summer afternoon on the porch to a round of actual golf if that’s how you spend your Saturdays.

The bourbon is the only variable that requires any attention. The tea and lemonade are doing the heavy lifting on flavor, so you want something that plays with them rather than fighting them — a naturally sweet, approachable bourbon with vanilla and a little caramel. This is not the place for barrel proof whiskey or heavily oaked single barrels.

Generic Bourbon Is the Right Call Here

Use whatever good mixing bourbon you have in the house. Evan Williams Black Label, Buffalo Trace, Jim Beam White Label, Heaven Hill — any straightforward Kentucky bourbon in the $15-$25 range makes an excellent Bourbon Arnold Palmer. The tea and lemonade are flavorful enough that the nuances of a more expensive bourbon would largely disappear anyway.

This is a hot afternoon drink. Bring out the everyday bottle.

The Tea and Lemonade Ratio

The classic Arnold Palmer is equal parts tea and lemonade, which is a good starting point. Some people prefer a more tea-forward version — two parts tea to one part lemonade — for a less sweet, slightly more tannic drink that lets the bourbon show up more clearly. Others go heavier on the lemonade for a brighter, more citrus-forward version.

Start with equal parts and adjust from there based on your preference. Make the lemonade a little tart — the tea and bourbon both add sweetness and you don’t want the finished drink going soft.

Make It a Pitcher

The Bourbon Arnold Palmer is a natural batch cocktail. Brew a pot of tea, make a batch of lemonade, combine them in a pitcher with the bourbon, and refrigerate. Pour over ice when you’re ready. It holds up in the fridge for a day or two without losing anything.

Instructions

1
Build over ice
Fill a highball glass with ice. Pour the bourbon over first, then add equal parts tea and lemonade.
2
Stir gently
A gentle stir to combine. Don't over-stir — you're not trying to fully blend this, just combine it.
3
Garnish
A lemon wheel and a sprig of fresh mint if you have it.
Pro tip

Quick lemonade: squeeze 4-5 lemons into a pitcher, add 0.5 cup simple syrup, and 3 cups cold water. Stir and taste — adjust tartness or sweetness as needed. Make it slightly more tart than you want the finished drink to be, because the tea and bourbon will add sweetness.

The whiskey

An everyday mixing bourbon is the right call here — the tea and lemonade provide the primary flavor and you want a bourbon that cooperates rather than competes. Natural sweetness and a clean finish are what you're looking for.

Variations

Sweet Tea Version
Use sweet tea instead of unsweetened tea for a more Southern, sweeter version. Reduce or omit the sugar in the lemonade to compensate.
Replace unsweetened tea with sweet tea. Make lemonade with less sugar — about half the normal amount.
Peach Arnold Palmer
Add a splash of peach nectar or peach schnapps for a fruity, summery variation.
Add 0.5oz peach nectar or peach schnapps to the glass before adding the tea and lemonade.
Sparkling Version
Replace the lemonade with sparkling lemonade or add a splash of club soda for effervescence.
Use sparkling lemonade, or add 1oz club soda to the finished drink.

Food Pairing

Porch food and backyard food across the board. The Bourbon Arnold Palmer is one of the most food-neutral cocktails there is — it pairs with virtually everything because it's not trying to do too much.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of tea works best?+
A standard black tea — Lipton, Luzianne, or whatever you brew at home — works perfectly. Brew it a little strong so the tea flavor carries through when it's diluted by the lemonade and ice. Sweet tea works too; just reduce the sugar in the lemonade to compensate.
Can I use store-bought lemonade?+
Yes. This is a casual drink and the difference between fresh and store-bought lemonade is smaller here than in a sour. A good quality store-bought lemonade — real lemon juice in the ingredient list, no high-fructose corn syrup — makes a perfectly respectable Bourbon Arnold Palmer.
How much bourbon is in a pitcher?+
For a full pitcher of Arnold Palmer (about 8 cups total, equal parts tea and lemonade), add about 1.5 to 2 cups of bourbon depending on how strong you want it. Start on the lighter side and adjust to taste. You can always add more; you can't take it back.
