When I poured a glass of Leather & Oak Bourbon from Leather & Oak Spirits in Hilliard, Ohio, I was intrigued by what this relatively young bourbon might offer. Bottled at 94.9 proof and priced at $59.89, it promised craft quality but also felt like a spirit still finding its full expression.

Appearance & Nose

The bourbon showed a warm amber hue in the glass. The nose was light and somewhat astringent, with soft aromas of corn, subtle green apple, and a bright hint of lemon peel. Herbal and floral notes added a delicate sharpness, giving the aroma a clean, fresh citrus character without much sweetness.

Palate & Mouthfeel

On the palate, the bourbon was clearly grain-forward with a roasted, woody backbone that stood out strongly. The herbal and floral tones came through clearly, intertwined with a lively citrus zest—like fresh lemon—that brought brightness and sharp acidity to the sip. There was only a light presence of sweet or candied notes, with just a hint of caramel and molasses flavor.

The bourbon’s mouthfeel was a bit thin, activating the savory areas of the tongue. While the heat was moderate, it never overwhelmed, instead balancing the lightly bitter and astringent qualities that dominated the sip. A subtle smokiness hovered in the background, adding another layer of complexity.

Finish

The finish was medium in length, dominated by leathery, dry notes and a persistent bitterness. The sharp acidity lingered alongside the oak influence, creating a finish that was memorable, if a bit austere compared to more mellow bourbons. It felt like the bourbon was still maturing, with potential to deepen and round out with more time.

Final Thoughts

I gave this bourbon a 7 out of 10. It’s a young, drier, wood-forward bourbon that highlights citrus and herbal complexity but lacks some balance and body. For drinkers who enjoy a crisp, slightly sharp bourbon with a leathery finish, Leather & Oak offers an intriguing experience. With additional aging, I think this bourbon could develop into something truly special.
