ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Woody Creek Distillers sits in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley, about 20 minutes from Aspen in the small town of Basalt. Founded in 2012 by Mark Kleckner and Pat Scanlon, this craft distillery operates out of a 10,000-square-foot facility that feels more like a working farm than your typical spirits operation. Kleckner, a former restaurateur, and Scanlon, who came from the tech world, decided to chase their passion for creating premium spirits using Colorado ingredients. They make vodka, gin, bourbon, and rye whiskey, all while maintaining a hands-on approach that keeps production relatively small but focused on quality. The duo didn’t just stumble into distilling—they spent years researching and planning before opening their doors. Kleckner’s restaurant background gave him an understanding of what makes spirits work in cocktails, while Scanlon brought business acumen from his previous career. They built their operation around a custom-made 500-gallon copper pot still from Germany, and they source their potatoes from the San Luis Valley for their vodka and grains from Colorado farms whenever possible. The distillery’s name comes from Woody Creek, the nearby area made famous by Hunter S. Thompson, though the founders are more focused on craft spirits than gonzo journalism. Visitors get a chance to see the entire operation up close, from the milling room where grains are processed to the barrel room where whiskeys age. The tasting room feels relaxed and unpretentious, with large windows looking out to the mountains and into the production area. You’re not getting a corporate tour here—it’s usually one of the founders or longtime employees walking you through their process and letting you taste spirits that represent their commitment to doing things right rather than doing them fast.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

What sets Woody Creek apart is their commitment to using Colorado ingredients whenever possible, particularly their potato vodka made from Rio Grande potatoes grown in the San Luis Valley. While many distilleries talk about local sourcing, these guys actually make it work—their vodka uses potatoes from specific Colorado farms, and they work directly with local grain producers for their whiskey production. The 500-gallon German copper pot still allows them to maintain small-batch production while having enough capacity to experiment with different recipes and techniques. Their location in the Roaring Fork Valley puts them at about 6,500 feet elevation, which affects how spirits age and develop flavor profiles differently than distilleries at sea level.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tours at Woody Creek feel intimate and educational rather than rushed or scripted. You’ll walk through the production facility with someone who actually knows the equipment intimately, often one of the founders or a longtime team member who can explain why they chose specific techniques and equipment. The space smells like fermenting grains and aging spirits, and you can see the entire process from grain storage through bottling. Tastings happen in their welcoming tasting room where you’ll sample their core lineup, and the staff is genuinely knowledgeable about flavor profiles and production methods. The mountain views through the large windows don’t hurt either, and the whole experience feels like visiting friends who happen to make excellent spirits.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re in the Aspen area and appreciate craft spirits, Woody Creek is definitely worth the drive to Basalt. This isn’t a massive tourist attraction, but that’s exactly what makes it appealing—you get personal attention and real insight into their operation. Spirits enthusiasts will appreciate the technical details and quality of their products, while casual visitors will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful setting. It’s particularly good for people who want to understand how ingredients and location affect spirit production, since their Colorado focus isn’t just marketing talk. Don’t expect elaborate cocktail programs or fancy food—this is about tasting well-made spirits and learning about the craft.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting, as they’re not always open for drop-in visits and tour schedules can vary seasonally. The drive from Aspen takes about 20 minutes, and GPS should get you there without trouble, but it’s worth noting that Basalt is small so don’t expect big city signage. If you’re visiting during ski season, traffic between Aspen and Basalt can be heavier than you’d expect. Ask about their potato vodka during tastings—it’s genuinely different from grain-based vodkas and shows what they’re trying to accomplish with local ingredients. They do sell bottles on-site, which is convenient since their products aren’t available everywhere.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Woody Creek Distillers — Visitor FAQ

What makes your potato vodka different from regular vodka?
We use Rio Grande potatoes from Colorado’s San Luis Valley, which gives our vodka a naturally creamy texture and clean finish that’s distinctly different from grain-based vodkas. The potatoes create more body and mouthfeel compared to the lighter character of wheat or corn vodkas.
How far in advance should I book a tour?
We recommend calling a few days ahead, especially during peak tourist seasons when Aspen area attractions get busy. Our tours are more intimate and educational, so we keep group sizes manageable and want to ensure someone knowledgeable is available to show you around.
Do you really use Colorado ingredients for everything?
We source Colorado ingredients whenever possible and practical. Our vodka uses Colorado potatoes exclusively, and we work with local farms for grains when we can get the quality and consistency we need. Some specialty items might come from elsewhere, but supporting Colorado agriculture is a real priority for us.
