ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A 40-Acre Farm That Makes Craft Spirits

Wonderbird Spirits sits on a 40-acre farm in Taylor, Mississippi, where husband-and-wife team Chand Harlow and Fraser Harlow turned their passion for craft spirits into a full-fledged distillery operation. Chand, a former tech executive, and Fraser, who worked in marketing, decided to leave their corporate careers behind in 2018 to pursue something more hands-on and creative. They converted an old barn on their property into a distillery and opened their doors in 2020, focusing on small-batch bourbon, gin, and vodka production using locally-sourced grains when possible. The couple handles most operations themselves, from mashing and distilling to bottling and marketing, making this truly a family operation where visitors often interact directly with the founders. Their 250-gallon copper still produces about 200 bottles per week, and they’ve built a loyal following among Mississippi craft spirits enthusiasts who appreciate the personal touch and quality-focused approach. The rustic farm setting gives visitors a genuine taste of artisanal distilling, complete with the sights and sounds of rural Mississippi.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Foraged Botanicals From Their Own Land

What sets Wonderbird apart is the genuine farm-to-bottle approach and the intimate scale of the operation. Chand and Fraser grow some of their own corn on the property and source other grains from Mississippi and Alabama farms, creating spirits that truly reflect the terroir of the region. Their gin incorporates foraged botanicals from their own land, including wild muscadine grapes and native herbs, giving it a distinctly Southern character you won’t find anywhere else. The distillery operates more like a craft workshop than a commercial facility, with hand-numbered bottles and small batches that often sell out quickly. Being one of the few craft distilleries in northern Mississippi, they’ve become a destination for spirits enthusiasts willing to make the drive for something authentically local.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers In Their Barn

Visits to Wonderbird feel more like hanging out with friends who happen to make excellent spirits than a formal distillery tour. Chand or Fraser usually greet visitors personally and walk them through the converted barn space, explaining their process while the smell of fermenting mash fills the air. You’ll see their copper still up close, learn about their grain selection, and often catch them in the middle of actual production work. Tastings happen at a simple wooden bar they built themselves, where you can sample their bourbon, gin, and seasonal offerings while hearing stories about the challenges and victories of starting a distillery from scratch. The whole experience feels authentic and unpolished in the best way possible, giving you a real sense of what craft distilling looks like at the grassroots level.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Pure Craft Distilling No Corporate Polish

This is perfect for people who want to see craft distilling in its purest form, without the bells and whistles of larger operations. If you’re looking for polished tours with professional guides and gift shops, this isn’t your spot. But if you appreciate meeting the actual people behind the spirits, learning about the real challenges of small-scale distilling, and tasting products that aren’t available anywhere else, Wonderbird delivers something genuinely special. The drive to Taylor is worth it for spirits enthusiasts who value authenticity over amenities. You’ll leave with bottles you can’t get elsewhere and stories about the people making them.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their Facebook page before making the drive, as hours can vary depending on production schedules and the season. The farm is a bit tricky to find, so use GPS and look for their small sign at the road entrance. Spring and fall offer the best weather for visiting, and you might catch them during harvest if you time it right. Ask about their seasonal gin releases, which often feature whatever they’re foraging on the property at the time. Bring cash for purchases, as they don’t always have card processing available. The gravel driveway can be muddy after rain, so dress accordingly and don’t wear your best shoes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Wonderbird Spirits — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?
Yes, definitely call ahead or message them on Facebook. Since it’s a small operation run by just two people, they need to plan around their production schedule and other farm activities.
What spirits can I buy on-site?
They typically have bourbon, gin, and vodka available, but selection depends on what they’ve bottled recently. Their seasonal gin releases sell out quickly, so ask about availability when you book.
How do I find the distillery?
Use GPS to get to the general area, then look for their small sign on County Road 303. It’s a working farm, so you’ll be driving up a gravel driveway to reach the barn where they distill.
