ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Willie’s Distillery sits on Main Street in Ennis, Montana, a small town tucked into the Madison Valley with the Tobacco Root Mountains as backdrop. Founded by Robin Weiss in 2010, this operation started as a dream to bring craft distilling to southwestern Montana. Weiss, who previously worked in construction, spent years learning the craft and navigating Montana’s regulatory landscape before opening the doors. The distillery occupies a converted building that houses both production and tasting facilities, producing vodka, gin, whiskey, and seasonal spirits using Montana grains and Rocky Mountain water. Willie’s represents one of Montana’s early craft distillery pioneers, named after Weiss’s grandfather Willie who inspired his entrepreneurial spirit. The operation remains small-scale by design, with Weiss handling much of the production himself using a custom copper still. What started as a retirement project has evolved into a community gathering spot where locals and travelers can sample spirits that capture the essence of Big Sky Country.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Willie’s distinguishes itself through its authentic small-town Montana character and founder Robin Weiss’s hands-on approach to every aspect of production. Unlike larger operations, you’re likely to meet the actual distiller during your visit, as Weiss often runs tastings and tours himself. The distillery sources grains locally when possible and uses water from the nearby Rocky Mountains, creating spirits that genuinely reflect their geographic origin. Being situated in Ennis, a town of fewer than 1,000 people, gives Willie’s an intimate, neighborly atmosphere that’s increasingly rare in craft distilling.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Visiting Willie’s feels like stepping into a friend’s workshop where serious craft happens. The tasting room maintains a casual, unpretentious vibe where Robin Weiss or his staff will walk you through their lineup of spirits with genuine enthusiasm rather than scripted presentations. You can see the production area during tours, getting an up-close look at the copper still and aging barrels. The space reflects its small-town setting—functional and welcoming without unnecessary frills, focusing attention on the spirits themselves.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Willie’s appeals most to visitors who appreciate authentic, small-scale craft distilling over polished tourist experiences. If you’re driving through southwestern Montana or exploring the Madison Valley, it’s worth stopping to support local craft and meet Robin Weiss, whose passion for distilling comes through clearly. Don’t expect elaborate facilities or extensive food offerings—this is about tasting well-made spirits in an authentic Montana setting. Whiskey enthusiasts will particularly enjoy discussing production methods with someone who’s intimately involved in every batch.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting, as hours can be seasonal and Robin sometimes adjusts the schedule for production needs. Ennis is small enough that the distillery is easy to find on Main Street, with parking typically available nearby. Ask Robin about his grain sources and water—he’s knowledgeable about how local ingredients influence flavor. If you’re interested in purchasing bottles, they often have spirits available that showcase different aspects of their production. Visit during warmer months when the drive through the Madison Valley is most scenic.
