ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Industrial Strip District Warehouse Making Historic Whiskey

Wigle Whiskey sits in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, where they’ve been turning out craft spirits since 2012 in a converted warehouse that still feels pretty industrial. Named after the Whiskey Rebellion’s Philip Wigle, they’re all about that Pennsylvania grain-to-glass thing, sourcing locally and keeping everything in-house. You can watch them work through big windows, smell the mash cooking, and get a real sense of how small-batch distilling actually happens. The tasting room has a neighborhood bar vibe rather than fancy tourist trap energy. They do tours that get into the nerdy details of fermentation and distillation, plus tastings where you’ll try stuff you can’t find in stores. It’s the kind of place where the bartenders know their products inside out because they probably helped make them.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Growing Their Own Grain Outside Pittsburgh

They’re obsessed with Pennsylvania history and ingredients, growing their own organic grains on a farm outside the city. The flagship rye whiskey uses a mash bill that supposedly mirrors what western Pennsylvania distillers made in the 1790s. Plus, they’re one of the few distilleries making ginever, that Dutch ancestor of gin that most Americans have never heard of.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Distillery Tours Not Tourist Theater

The space feels more like a working distillery than a polished visitor center, which is exactly the point. Tours are small groups where you can actually ask questions and get real answers from people who know the equipment personally. The tasting room has that relaxed Strip District energy where locals mix with visitors, and the bartenders will geek out about specific batches if you’re interested.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Whiskey Education Worth the Trip

If you’re into craft spirits and want to see how a serious small operation works, absolutely. It’s not the most Instagram-ready distillery you’ll visit, but you’ll learn more about actual whiskey making than at most places. Worth combining with other Strip District stops since you’re already in one of Pittsburgh’s best food neighborhoods.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book tours ahead since they only run a few times per day and fill up on weekends. The Strip District gets busy Saturday mornings with the farmers market crowd, so plan accordingly if you’re driving. Their bottle shop has stuff you won’t find elsewhere, including barrel picks and distillery-only releases. Tours run about 45 minutes and include tastings, so don’t plan anything too serious right after. Parking is street parking or paid lots, but it’s walkable from a lot of other Strip District spots.
