ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Montana Distillery That Serves Dinner Too

Whitefish Distillery & Grill sits along Highway 2 East in Kalispell, Montana, about 15 minutes from Whitefish proper. Founded by Scott and Sharon Haggett in 2010, this operation combines craft spirits production with a full-service restaurant under one roof. Scott brings decades of hospitality experience to the venture, while the distillery focuses on small-batch whiskey, vodka, and gin using Montana grains and glacial water from the Flathead Valley. The Haggetts didn’t stumble into distilling by accident. Scott’s background in restaurant management led him to see an opportunity to create something that paired great food with locally-made spirits. They spent two years navigating Montana’s licensing requirements before opening their doors in 2012. The facility houses both the production equipment and a full kitchen, creating an unusual hybrid that lets visitors watch the distilling process while enjoying a meal. What you’ll find is a working distillery where production happens in full view of diners and visitors. The 2,500-square-foot space includes copper stills, fermentation tanks, and a restaurant that serves everything from burgers to steaks alongside house-made cocktails. It’s not the biggest operation in Montana, but the combination of on-site distilling and dining creates an experience you won’t find at most craft distilleries.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Watch Whiskey Being Made From Your Dinner Table

The restaurant integration sets Whitefish Distillery apart from typical tasting room experiences. While most distilleries offer samples and maybe some snacks, you can order a full dinner here while watching grain ferment in tanks just feet away. Their location also gives them access to Flathead Valley’s glacial water, which they use throughout production. The Haggetts source Montana grains when possible, keeping the supply chain regional. The scale remains deliberately small – they’re producing hundreds of bottles per batch rather than thousands, which means each run gets personal attention from Scott and his small team.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Distillery Meets Full Service Restaurant

You’ll walk into a space that feels more like a brewpub than a traditional distillery, with dining tables scattered around stainless steel fermentation vessels and copper stills. The aroma shifts between malting grains and whatever’s cooking in the kitchen – it’s an odd but appealing combination. Tours happen informally, often with Scott himself explaining the mash-to-bottle process while you sip cocktails made with their vodka or whiskey. The restaurant side serves standard American fare, but the cocktails showcase their spirits in ways you can’t experience anywhere else.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Unique Combo Worth The Drive East

If you’re looking for a traditional distillery tour with white glove service and polished presentations, this might not hit the mark. But if you want to see craft distilling in action while having dinner, it’s pretty unique. The food is solid pub fare, nothing fancy, but the chance to taste their spirits in cocktails while watching production makes it worthwhile for spirits enthusiasts. It appeals most to visitors who want something different from the typical Montana brewery experience and don’t mind a more casual, working distillery atmosphere.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm they’re distilling during your visit – production schedules vary and there’s more to see when equipment is running. The restaurant takes reservations, which is smart during peak summer tourist season. GPS can be tricky along Highway 2, so look for the large roadside sign. Their whiskey is young since they opened relatively recently, so adjust expectations accordingly. Ask Scott about the water source if you catch him – he’s passionate about how Flathead Valley’s glacial runoff affects flavor profiles.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Whitefish Distillery & Grill — Visitor FAQ

Can I tour the distillery without eating at the restaurant?
Yes, but the experience works best when you combine both. The distillery equipment is integrated into the restaurant space, so tours are informal and often happen while you’re dining or having drinks.
How old are the whiskeys?
Since they started distilling in 2012, their whiskeys are still relatively young compared to established brands. The bourbon and rye continue aging, with releases happening as batches reach maturity.
Do you offer private events or group tours?
The restaurant can accommodate groups, and private events are possible. Call ahead to discuss options since the space serves both dining customers and distillery visitors simultaneously.
