ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Vermont's Premier Rye In Quechee Village

WhistlePig’s tasting room sits right in the heart of Quechee Village, making it the most accessible spot to sample Vermont’s most famous rye whiskey without driving up to their main farm distillery. Founded by Raj Peter Bhakta in 2008, WhistlePig started as an ambitious project to create America’s finest rye whiskey on a 500-acre farm in Shoreham. Bhakta, a former contestant on The Apprentice and heir to a real estate fortune, fell in love with rye whiskey and decided Vermont’s climate was perfect for aging. The Quechee location opened as their southern outpost, housed in a renovated building on Main Street that captures the classic Vermont village vibe. The story behind WhistlePig is part Silicon Valley ambition, part Vermont farming tradition. Bhakta originally sourced aged Canadian rye while building his distillery operation, but the goal was always to create a farm-to-bottle Vermont rye. Master Distiller Pete Lynch joined in 2017, bringing experience from High West, and they’ve been pushing boundaries ever since with experimental finishes and triple terroir projects. They’re growing their own rye, coopering their own barrels, and even making their own yeast. It’s the kind of vertical integration that would make a tech CEO proud, applied to whiskey making. The Quechee tasting room gives you the WhistlePig experience without the farm tour commitment. You’re tasting world-class rye whiskeys that have won international awards, including their 15-year that scored 96 points from Wine Enthusiast. The space feels more sophisticated than your typical Vermont tasting room, which makes sense given they’re charging premium prices for premium whiskey. You’ll walk away understanding why rye whiskey is having its moment and why WhistlePig is leading that charge.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Triple Terroir Whiskey From Farm to Glass

WhistlePig isn’t just another craft distillery – they’re attempting something unprecedented in American whiskey with their Triple Terroir project, controlling every aspect from grain to glass on their Vermont farm. While most distilleries buy their grain and barrels, WhistlePig grows estate rye, coopers their own Vermont oak barrels, and cultivates proprietary yeast strains. Their 15-year Vermont Estate Oak aged exclusively in barrels made from trees on their property, creating a truly local terroir expression that’s never been done at this scale in American whiskey. They’re also pushing rye whiskey innovation with finishes in everything from Sauternes casks to Madeira barrels, treating rye with the same experimental approach usually reserved for Scotch.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Premium Tastings Without the Drive

The Quechee tasting room feels upscale but approachable, with a polished bar setup where knowledgeable staff walk you through WhistlePig’s range from their entry-level 10-year to limited releases that can cost several hundred dollars. You’ll taste side-by-side comparisons that show how different barrel finishes affect the same base rye, which is genuinely educational if you’re curious about whiskey production. The staff knows their stuff and can explain the technical details behind WhistlePig’s processes without being pretentious about it. The space itself is clean and modern with Vermont touches, designed for focused tasting rather than hanging out all afternoon.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Serious Rye Education Worth the Investment

If you’re serious about rye whiskey or curious about what premium American whiskey can be, absolutely. WhistlePig makes some of the best rye in the country, and their tasting room lets you try expressions you’d never commit to buying blind given the price points. This isn’t for casual drinkers looking for a party atmosphere – it’s for people who want to understand what justifies a $200 bottle of whiskey. The educational component is strong, and you’ll leave with a real appreciation for rye whiskey’s complexity. Just know you’re paying Vermont premium prices for the experience.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Book your tasting in advance through their website, especially during leaf season when Quechee gets swamped with tourists. The location is easy to find right on Main Street with parking available, though it can fill up on busy weekends. Ask specifically about their limited releases and barrel finishes during your tasting – that’s where WhistlePig really shows off their innovation. If you’re planning to buy bottles, check what’s available at the farm distillery versus the tasting room, as selection can vary. Don’t expect a full distillery tour here since this is just their tasting outpost, but the staff can explain their farm-to-bottle process in detail.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WhistlePig Tasting Room — Visitor FAQ

What’s the difference between the Quechee tasting room and the main distillery?
The Quechee location is purely a tasting room and retail space – you won’t see production or take distillery tours here. For the full farm experience and production tours, you need to visit their main facility in Shoreham, about an hour away. The Quechee room offers the same whiskeys with a more convenient village location.
Why are WhistlePig whiskeys so expensive compared to other ryes?
WhistlePig positions itself as ultra-premium rye whiskey with longer aging (10+ years minimum) and extensive experimentation with barrel finishes. They’re also working toward complete vertical integration, growing their own rye and making their own barrels, which increases costs but allows unprecedented control over the final product.
Do I need to be a whiskey expert to enjoy the tasting?
Not at all, but having some interest in learning about whiskey helps since WhistlePig focuses on education and technical aspects. The staff is good at meeting you at your knowledge level, whether you’re curious about your first rye whiskey or comparing single barrel selections.
