ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Husband-Wife Team Making Their Own Way

Whiskey Thief Distilling Co. sits just outside Frankfort on Crab Orchard Road, where founders Chris and Melissa Zaborowski turned their passion for craft spirits into Kentucky’s newest bourbon venture. The husband-and-wife team opened their doors in 2019 after Chris left his career in engineering and Melissa stepped away from marketing to chase their shared dream of making small-batch whiskey. Their 5,000-square-foot facility houses custom copper stills and a tasting room that feels more like a friend’s living room than a corporate experience. The Zaborowskis didn’t take the typical path into distilling. Chris spent years homebrewing and studying fermentation science while working his day job, and Melissa handled the business side while they saved up to make the leap. They chose Frankfort specifically to be close to Kentucky’s bourbon heritage while carving out their own identity. The operation runs lean with just the two of them and a small crew, which means when you visit, you’re likely talking directly to the people who made your whiskey. What you’ll find here isn’t the polished tour experience of the big distilleries, and that’s exactly the point. You can watch the actual production process, ask questions about their specific mash bills, and taste spirits that are still finding their voice. The atmosphere is relaxed and educational, perfect for folks who want to understand how whiskey actually gets made rather than just hear the marketing version.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Engineering Meets Old Kentucky Tradition

This is one of the few distilleries where you’ll actually meet the founders on most visits, and Chris’s engineering background shows up in some clever production innovations they’ve developed. They’re working with locally-sourced grains from Kentucky farms within a 100-mile radius, which isn’t just marketing speak—they can tell you which farm your corn came from. The facility design maximizes visitor interaction with the production process, so you’re not looking at whiskey-making from behind ropes. You’re seeing it up close while it’s actually happening.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Scripts Here Just Real Conversations

Tours here feel more like hanging out in someone’s workshop than following a script. Chris or Melissa usually leads the experience themselves, walking you through their grain-to-glass process while explaining why they made specific choices about equipment and techniques. The tasting room overlooks the production floor, so you can sip their spirits while watching barrels get filled or the mash being prepared. The whole experience takes about an hour, and they encourage questions throughout rather than saving them for the end.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect for Whiskey Nerds and Newcomers

If you’re looking for Instagram-worthy photo ops or bourbon tourism polish, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to understand how small-batch distilling actually works and taste spirits from people who can explain every step of their process, it’s absolutely worth the drive. This appeals most to whiskey enthusiasts who appreciate craft over spectacle, and anyone curious about the technical side of distilling. You won’t find tour buses here, which means a more personal experience but also fewer amenities than the big-name distilleries.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before driving out—they’re a small operation and sometimes close for production work or private events. The location is a bit tricky to find, so use GPS and look for the small sign on Crab Orchard Road. Parking is limited but adequate for their typical crowd size. Ask Chris about his fermentation process if you’re there—his engineering background makes for some fascinating technical discussions. Don’t expect a gift shop full of branded merchandise, but you can buy bottles of their current releases.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Whiskey Thief Distilling Co. — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make a reservation for tours and tastings?
Yes, definitely call ahead or book through their website. As a small operation run primarily by the founders, they need to plan around production schedules and can’t accommodate walk-ins reliably.
Will I actually meet the founders during my visit?
Most likely, yes. Chris and Melissa Zaborowski lead the majority of tours and tastings themselves, so you’ll probably interact directly with the people who built the distillery and made your whiskey.
How long has Whiskey Thief been operating?
They opened in 2019, so they’re still a relatively new operation. This means their aged spirits are still developing, but you get to taste whiskey from a distillery that’s actively finding its voice and perfecting its craft.
