ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

An Old Auto Garage Making New Whiskey

Village Garage Distillery sits right on Depot Street in downtown Bennington, Vermont, housed in what used to be an actual auto garage. Owners Chris and Sherri Rigney transformed this vintage building into a craft distillery that opened in 2019, bringing small-batch spirits production to southern Vermont. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, and gin using a 250-gallon copper still, keeping production deliberately small to focus on quality over quantity. The Rigneys didn’t start out in the spirits business—Chris worked in construction while Sherri had a background in hospitality—but they’d been home distilling enthusiasts for years before deciding to go professional. The transition from garage mechanics’ workspace to distillery wasn’t just about the name; they kept some of the building’s automotive character while adding the copper and wood elements you’d expect from a whiskey operation. Their approach is hands-on and experimental, with Chris handling most of the distilling while Sherri manages the front of house and tastings. What you’ll find here is a genuinely local operation that feels more like visiting friends who happen to make really good spirits than a polished tourist destination. The space retains some of that garage workshop feel—concrete floors, high ceilings, industrial lighting—but warmed up with barrels and the smell of mash fermenting. They’re focused on building their aged whiskey program, so what’s available changes as barrels reach maturity, but their clear spirits like vodka and gin are available year-round for tastings and bottle sales.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Drinking Where Cars Used to Get Fixed

The building’s automotive history gives Village Garage a character that’s genuinely unique among Vermont distilleries—you’re literally drinking in a converted car repair shop, and the Rigneys embraced that industrial heritage rather than trying to hide it. Their small scale means Chris is involved in every step of production, from mashing to bottling, so there’s a personal touch that larger operations can’t match. Being one of the few distilleries in the Bennington area, they’ve become a local gathering spot where you’re as likely to meet neighbors as tourists, which creates a community feel that’s rare in the craft spirits world.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Scripts Here Just Real People

You’ll walk into a space that feels like an upscale workshop, with concrete floors and exposed beams but warmed by copper stills and aging barrels. The Rigneys usually handle tastings themselves, so you’re getting stories directly from the people who made what you’re drinking. Tastings happen at a simple bar setup where you can see the production area, and they’re happy to explain their process while you sample. The atmosphere is relaxed and conversational—more like hanging out in a friend’s well-equipped garage than a formal tasting room experience.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect for Folks Who Like It Real

This is perfect for people who prefer authentic, low-key experiences over polished tourist attractions. If you’re looking for elaborate tours or fancy facilities, you might be disappointed, but if you want to meet actual distillers and taste spirits that aren’t available anywhere else, it’s worth the stop. The personal interaction with Chris and Sherri makes it memorable in a way that scripted tours can’t match. It’s especially good for locals or people staying in the Bennington area who want to support a genuine small business rather than just checking distilleries off a list.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before visiting—they’re a small operation and hours can vary based on production schedules or if they’re at farmers markets or events. Parking is easy right on Depot Street, and the location is walkable from downtown Bennington if you’re exploring the area. Ask about their aging program and what barrels they have coming up—Chris is passionate about the process and you’ll learn more than you expected. Don’t expect a large selection of aged spirits yet since they’re still relatively new, but their clear spirits show real skill and give you a sense of what their whiskeys will become.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Village Garage Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?
While appointments aren’t required, it’s smart to call ahead or check their Facebook page since they’re a small operation. Sometimes they’re out at markets or events, and production schedules can affect availability for tastings.
What’s the story behind the garage theme?
The building actually was an automotive garage before Chris and Sherri converted it into a distillery. They kept some of the industrial character because it felt authentic to the space’s history, and the name Village Garage honors that past while reflecting their community focus.
How long have they been making whiskey?
They opened in 2019, so their aged whiskey program is still developing. What’s available for tasting depends on which barrels have reached maturity, but their vodka and gin show the quality you can expect from their whiskeys as they age.
