ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Minnesota's First Distillery Since Prohibition Ended

Vikre Distillery sits right on Lake Superior in Duluth’s Canal Park district, making it Minnesota’s first distillery since Prohibition ended. Joel Vikre and Emily Vikre launched this operation in 2014, bringing craft spirits back to a state that hadn’t seen legal distilling in decades. Joel’s background in chemistry and Emily’s business acumen created the foundation for what started as a leap of faith in a 2,400 square-foot space. They’re producing gin, aquavit, whiskey, and bourbon using a 250-gallon copper still from Germany, plus they’ve got a smaller 26-gallon still for experimental batches. The couple didn’t just want to make spirits—they wanted to create something distinctly Northern, influenced by Scandinavian traditions and Minnesota ingredients. The tasting room overlooks the harbor, and you can literally watch ships come and go while sipping their flagship Juniper Gin or Boreal Cedar Gin. What started as Joel quitting his day job to chase a distilling dream has evolved into a legitimate operation that’s helped define Minnesota’s craft spirits scene. The Vikres have been methodical about growth, focusing on quality and building relationships with local bars and restaurants before expanding distribution. Their approach reflects the Minnesota ethos—hardworking, unpretentious, and focused on doing things right rather than doing them fast.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Cedar Gin That Tastes Like Minnesota

This is literally Minnesota’s first distillery since Prohibition, which gives it serious historical significance in the state’s alcohol landscape. The Scandinavian influence runs deep here—Joel’s Norwegian heritage shows up in their aquavit production, which is rare among American craft distilleries. They’re using local ingredients whenever possible, including Minnesota corn and wheat, and they’ve experimented with aging spirits in different climates by utilizing Minnesota’s extreme temperature swings. The location right on Lake Superior isn’t just scenic—it actually affects their aging process because of the humidity and temperature variations from the lake effect. Their Boreal Cedar Gin incorporates actual cedar tips, creating something you won’t find anywhere else.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tasting Spirits While Ships Pass By

You’re tasting in a space that feels more like a modern cocktail bar than a typical distillery tasting room, with big windows overlooking the Duluth harbor. The tours are intimate since it’s a small operation—you’ll likely meet Joel or Emily personally, and they’re genuinely enthusiastic about explaining their processes without getting too technical. The tasting flights let you work through their core lineup, and the staff knows their products well enough to explain the difference between their gins and why they chose certain botanicals. The space has exposed brick and industrial elements, but it’s polished enough that you’d bring a date here. You can see the stills from the tasting area, so there’s always a visual reminder that this is a working distillery, not just a bar.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Historic Significance With Genuine Quality

If you’re interested in craft spirits or Minnesota history, absolutely. The novelty of visiting the state’s first post-Prohibition distillery adds genuine significance to the experience. Their gins are legitimately good—not just good for a local distillery—and the aquavit gives you something you probably haven’t tried before. The Canal Park location means you can easily combine this with other Duluth attractions. However, if you’re expecting a large-scale bourbon operation with extensive tours, you’ll be disappointed. This is craft distilling at its most intimate scale, which some people love and others find underwhelming. The whiskey and bourbon are still young since they only started in 2014, so don’t come expecting aged spirits to rival Kentucky operations.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website for current hours since they’ve adjusted their schedule seasonally. Parking in Canal Park can be tricky during summer tourist season, so plan extra time or consider walking if you’re staying downtown. Try the Boreal Cedar Gin even if you think you don’t like gin—it’s genuinely unique and showcases what they do best. Ask about their barrel-aging experiments if you’re interested in the technical side. Winter visits can be spectacular because of the lake views, but summer gets crowded with tourists. They often have special releases or limited batches available only at the distillery, so ask what’s new when you visit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Vikre Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Is this really Minnesota’s first distillery since Prohibition?
Yes, Vikre Distillery holds the distinction of being Minnesota’s first legal distillery since Prohibition ended. They opened in 2014 after navigating the complex process of changing state laws and regulations that had prevented distilling for decades.
What makes their gin different from other craft gins?
Their Boreal Cedar Gin is genuinely unique, incorporating actual northern Minnesota cedar tips for a piney, resinous character you won’t find elsewhere. Their Juniper Gin takes a more traditional London Dry approach but uses local botanicals when possible.
How old are their whiskeys and bourbons?
Since they started distilling in 2014, their whiskeys are relatively young by industry standards. However, they’re aging well and developing complexity. The extreme Minnesota temperature swings actually help accelerate the aging process compared to more temperate climates.
