ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

High Desert Craft In an Unlikely Place

Verdi Local Distillery sits in a small industrial unit just off Old Highway 40 in Verdi, Nevada, right at the California border where the Sierra Nevada mountains meet the high desert. This micro-distillery opened in 2018 as the passion project of local entrepreneurs who wanted to bring craft spirits production to the Reno-Tahoe area. The operation runs out of a modest 2,000 square foot space that houses everything from grain-to-glass production to a small tasting room with mountain views. The distillery focuses on small-batch whiskey and vodka production using locally sourced ingredients when possible. Their copper still setup allows them to produce around 200 bottles per batch, keeping everything intimate and hands-on. The team takes pride in being one of the few true craft distilleries in northern Nevada, filling a gap in the region’s growing craft beverage scene. Visitors get an up-close look at the entire process in this compact but efficient space. You’re not dealing with massive industrial equipment here—everything’s at human scale, which means you can actually see and understand what’s happening. The atmosphere is relaxed and educational, perfect for folks who want to learn about distilling without the crowds you’d find at bigger operations.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Border Location Benefits Nevada Rules, California Access

Being located right on the Nevada-California border gives Verdi Local access to both states’ agricultural resources while operating under Nevada’s more favorable distilling regulations. The high desert climate at 4,500 feet elevation creates interesting aging conditions—hot days and cool nights that differ significantly from traditional whiskey regions. Their small batch approach means they can experiment with different mash bills and techniques that larger distilleries can’t justify, and they’ve developed relationships with local grain suppliers to source Nevada-grown corn and wheat when available.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Industrial Unit Setting Real Working Distillery

The tasting room occupies one corner of the production facility, so you’re literally surrounded by the working distillery during your visit. Tours are informal and conversational—more like chatting with a neighbor who happens to make spirits than a scripted presentation. You’ll see the mash tanks, the copper still, and aging barrels up close while learning about their process. Tastings include their current spirits lineup, and staff are happy to explain the differences between batches since everything’s made in small quantities.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Perfect Tahoe Detour For Spirits Enthusiasts

If you’re driving between Reno and Tahoe and appreciate craft spirits, it’s worth the short detour. This isn’t a destination distillery with elaborate facilities, but it’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who enjoy meeting the actual people making their drinks. The intimate scale means you’ll get personal attention and learn things you wouldn’t at larger operations. Don’t expect fancy amenities or extensive gift shops—come for authentic craft distilling and leave with bottles you can’t find elsewhere.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead since hours can vary with production schedules, and the small staff sometimes needs to focus on distilling rather than visitors. The location can be tricky to find—look for the industrial complex just past the California border. Parking is limited but usually available in front of the unit. Ask about their current experiments and seasonal batches, as they often have interesting limited releases that aren’t widely distributed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Verdi Local Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to make an appointment to visit?
Yes, it’s best to call ahead since this is a working distillery with a small staff. They want to make sure someone’s available to show you around and that they’re not in the middle of production runs that would interfere with visits.
How hard is it to find the distillery?
The location in an industrial complex can be tricky to spot from the highway. Look for the Old Highway 40 signs just past the California border, and don’t be surprised if your GPS gets confused in this area.
What spirits can I buy on-site?
They typically have their vodka and whiskey available for purchase, though selection depends on what batches are ready. Since everything’s small-batch production, inventory changes frequently and some releases sell out quickly.
