ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Toledo's First Legal Distillery Since the 1920s

The Toledo Spirits Company sits in a converted warehouse at 1301 N Summit Street, bringing craft distilling to Ohio’s Glass City for the first time in decades. Founded in 2014 by Mike Deters and his business partner, this operation started as a dream between friends who wanted to create something uniquely Toledo. Deters, a former automotive engineer, spent years perfecting recipes in his garage before they found this 8,000-square-foot space in the Uptown district. They officially opened their doors in 2016 after navigating the complex world of federal and state licensing, becoming Toledo’s first legal distillery since Prohibition. The facility houses a 500-gallon copper pot still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works, the same company that builds stills for Kentucky’s legendary distilleries. They focus on small-batch bourbon, rye whiskey, and vodka, with plans that were always bigger than their initial setup suggested. The building itself has character – exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and industrial touches that feel authentically Toledo rather than artificially rustic. You can see the entire operation from the tasting room, which wasn’t an accident in the design.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Great Lakes Water Changes Everything

Toledo Spirits holds the distinction of being the first distillery to operate legally in Toledo since the 1920s, which gives it genuine historical significance in the city’s industrial landscape. They’re using Lake Erie water in their mash, filtered through their own system, which gives their spirits a distinct mineral profile you won’t find elsewhere. The location in Toledo’s Uptown district puts them in a neighborhood that’s seen real revitalization, and they’ve become an anchor business for the area. Their approach focuses on creating spirits that reflect the Great Lakes region rather than trying to copy Kentucky bourbon or craft distillery trends from other states.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Warehouse Not Tourist Theater

You’ll walk into a working distillery where the tasting room sits right next to the production floor, separated by glass so you can watch the process while you sample. The space feels industrial but comfortable, with high ceilings and the kind of authentic warehouse atmosphere that comes from actually being in a converted warehouse rather than designed to look like one. Tours are intimate affairs, usually led by one of the founders or key staff members who can explain not just what they’re doing but why they chose to do it this way. The tasting experience focuses on their core products, and the staff knows their spirits well enough to explain the subtle differences between batches.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Distilling Without the Polish

If you’re interested in seeing craft distilling in its authentic form – not the polished, tourist-focused operations you’ll find in more established markets – Toledo Spirits delivers that experience. It appeals most to people who want to understand the actual process and business of making spirits rather than those looking for a party atmosphere or elaborate tours. You won’t get the bells and whistles of larger operations, but you will get genuine insight into how a small distillery operates. For bourbon and rye enthusiasts, it’s worth the stop to try spirits made with Great Lakes water and see how that affects the final product.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting, as hours can vary and they sometimes close for private events or production needs. The distillery is located in an area that’s still developing, so GPS should get you there but don’t expect a lot of obvious signage from the street. Parking is available on-site, which is convenient for this part of Toledo. Ask about their production schedule when you visit – if they’re distilling that day, you’ll get to see the process in action and smell the mash cooking. Try their rye whiskey if it’s available, as it showcases their approach better than their younger spirits.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
