ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

The Block Distilling Co. sits in Denver’s RiNo (River North Art District) at 2990 Larimer Street, occupying a converted warehouse space that fits perfectly with the neighborhood’s industrial-meets-artsy vibe. Founded in 2014 by Ted Palmer and his partners, this operation started as Denver’s first distillery since Prohibition ended. Palmer, who previously worked in finance, caught the distilling bug and decided to transform a 6,000-square-foot warehouse into a full-scale spirits production facility. They focus primarily on whiskey, gin, and vodka, using a 500-gallon copper still from Germany that dominates their production floor. The journey from concept to opening wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. Palmer and his team spent nearly two years navigating Denver’s zoning laws and permitting process, becoming pioneers in establishing what would eventually become a thriving craft distilling scene in the city. The team includes head distiller Ryan Lowe, who brings experience from Colorado’s brewing industry and applies those fermentation skills to spirits production. Their philosophy centers on using Colorado ingredients when possible and letting the natural flavors speak for themselves rather than over-engineering the process. Visitors walk into a working distillery where you can see the entire operation from grain to bottle. The tasting room occupies the front portion of the warehouse, with exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and large windows that flood the space with natural light. You’ll hear the hum of production equipment and catch whiffs of fermenting grain and aging spirits. The atmosphere feels authentically industrial rather than polished touristy, which either appeals to you or it doesn’t.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

The Block earned the distinction of being Denver’s first legal distillery since the 1920s, which meant they had to essentially write the playbook for urban distilling in the city. Their location in RiNo puts them at the center of Denver’s arts district transformation, surrounded by galleries, breweries, and creative spaces rather than tucked away in some industrial park. They mill their own grain on-site using a traditional grist mill, and their German-made copper still allows them to control every aspect of the distillation process. What’s particularly interesting is their approach to aging – they use the dramatic Colorado temperature swings to their advantage, claiming the extreme seasonal variations accelerate the aging process compared to more temperate climates.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Tours run about 45 minutes and you’ll actually walk through the production facility, not just peer through windows. Ryan or one of the other distillers typically leads tours, so you’re getting technical details from people who actually run the equipment daily. The space smells like fermenting grain and wood, and you can hear the machinery working – it’s a real distillery, not a showroom. Tastings happen at a simple bar setup in the tasting room where you’ll sample their core lineup, usually including their bourbon, rye, gin, and vodka. The staff knows their products well and can explain the differences in mash bills and distillation techniques if you’re interested in the technical side.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re into the craft distilling process and want to see a working operation rather than a polished tourist attraction, The Block delivers. Whiskey enthusiasts will appreciate talking directly with the distillers and understanding their approach to using local ingredients. The location in RiNo makes it easy to combine with other brewery and gallery visits in the neighborhood. However, if you’re expecting a slick visitor center experience or elaborate cocktail program, you might find it too bare-bones. This appeals more to spirits geeks and people who want to understand how distilling actually works rather than casual tourists looking for Instagram moments.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting since they’re a small operation and hours can vary based on production schedules. Parking can be tricky in RiNo, especially on weekends when the art district gets busy, so plan extra time to find a spot or consider rideshare. Tours fill up quickly on weekends, so book online in advance rather than just showing up. Ask about their barrel aging program if you’re interested – they offer barrel purchases for serious whiskey collectors. The best time to visit is probably weekday afternoons when production is happening and you’ll see the full operation in action.
