ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

The Better Man Distilling Company sits on River Avenue in downtown Patchogue, bringing craft spirits to Long Island’s south shore. Founded by Ryan Hubbard, a former investment banker who traded Wall Street for whiskey making, the distillery opened its doors in 2017 after a two-year journey through New York’s licensing maze. Hubbard partnered with master distiller Tom Johnson, who previously worked at Kings County Distillery in Brooklyn, to launch their operation in a renovated 3,000-square-foot industrial space that once housed auto parts manufacturing. They focus on small-batch bourbon, rye whiskey, and seasonal spirits using a 500-gallon copper pot still custom-built in Kentucky. The name comes from Hubbard’s philosophy that making whiskey forces you to slow down, be patient, and become a better version of yourself through the craft. The industrial-chic space features exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and towering fermentation tanks that visitors can walk among during tours. They produce about 1,200 bottles per month, with everything from mashing to bottling done on-site by a team of four.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

You’re looking at one of Long Island’s first grain-to-glass whiskey operations, using 100% New York State grains sourced from farms within 150 miles of the distillery. Their bourbon mash bill includes 25% wheat instead of the traditional rye, creating a softer, more approachable profile that reflects the maritime climate’s influence on aging. The distillery ages spirits in 15-gallon barrels rather than standard 53-gallon ones, allowing for faster maturation and more wood contact per ounce of whiskey. Johnson brings a unique approach from his Brooklyn days, using wine yeast strains for certain fermentations to create complex flavor profiles you won’t find elsewhere. The location matters too – being just miles from the Great South Bay means the barrels experience dramatic temperature swings and humidity changes that accelerate the aging process compared to inland distilleries.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Ryan or Tom personally leads most tours, walking you through their grain room where you can touch the corn, wheat, and malted barley before it becomes whiskey. The space smells like fresh bread during mashing days and sweet fermentation when the tanks are active. Tours last about 45 minutes and include watching the distillation process if you visit during production hours, typically Tuesday through Thursday mornings. The tasting room occupies the front corner with a reclaimed wood bar where you’ll sample four expressions while learning about each one’s production story. They don’t rush you through tastings – expect to spend 20-30 minutes discussing flavor profiles and asking questions. The atmosphere feels more like hanging out in a friend’s workshop than a polished tasting room, with Johnson often stopping by to chat about barrel aging techniques or upcoming releases.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

This appeals most to whiskey enthusiasts who want to understand the technical side of distilling and bourbon drinkers curious about New York’s emerging whiskey scene. You’ll get genuine education about grain-to-glass production and taste spirits you can’t find outside Long Island. Don’t expect elaborate cocktail programs or food pairings – this is about the whiskey itself and the craft behind it. The intimate scale means you’ll have actual conversations with the people making your spirits, something impossible at larger operations. If you’re looking for Instagram-worthy spaces or polished tourist experiences, you might leave wanting more. But if you appreciate watching craftspeople work and learning about local agriculture’s role in whiskey making, you’ll find this more engaging than many bigger-name distilleries.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or book through their website since tours are limited to eight people and weekend slots fill up quickly. GPS can be tricky on River Avenue, but look for the industrial building with Better Man’s simple black sign – parking is free in their small lot behind the building. Visit on production days if possible to see the still running and smell the mash cooking. Ask Tom about his wine yeast experiments and request to taste their barrel-proof bourbon if available. Their standard expressions are good, but the cask-strength stuff shows what they’re really capable of. Bring cash for bottle purchases since their credit card system sometimes acts up, and don’t plan to linger after your tasting since they typically have another group coming in.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Better Man Distilling Company — Visitor FAQ

How far ahead do I need to book tours?
Weekend tours typically book 2-3 weeks in advance, especially during fall and winter months. Weekday tours sometimes have same-week availability, but calling ahead is always recommended since they limit groups to eight people.
Can I see the distilling process during my visit?
Production happens Tuesday through Thursday mornings, so tours during these times let you see the still running and smell active fermentation. Weekend tours focus more on the equipment and aging process since they’re not actively distilling.
What makes their bourbon different from Kentucky bourbon?
They use 25% wheat instead of rye in their mash bill, creating a softer profile, plus New York’s climate and smaller barrels create different aging characteristics. The maritime influence from being near the Great South Bay also affects how the whiskey develops compared to inland distilleries.
