Tenmile Distillery sits on 78 Sinpatch Road in Wassaic, New York, in the heart of Dutchess County’s rolling farmland. Founded by Alex Grenz and Matt McKenzie in 2013, this craft distillery operates out of a converted dairy barn on what was once part of a working farm. The duo met while working in Manhattan’s restaurant scene—Grenz as a sommelier and McKenzie in restaurant management—before deciding to leave city life behind and try their hand at distilling. They chose the name Tenmile after the creek that runs through the property, which early Dutch settlers called “Tien Mijl Creek.” The distillery produces vodka, gin, whiskey, and seasonal spirits using locally sourced grains when possible. The operation started small, with Grenz and McKenzie doing everything from mashing to bottling themselves in the early days. They’ve since expanded their production capacity while maintaining their hands-on approach to crafting spirits. The barn setting gives the whole operation a rustic, farm-to-glass feel that reflects their commitment to local ingredients and traditional methods adapted for small-batch production.
