ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Tenmile Distillery sits on 78 Sinpatch Road in Wassaic, New York, in the heart of Dutchess County’s rolling farmland. Founded by Alex Grenz and Matt McKenzie in 2013, this craft distillery operates out of a converted dairy barn on what was once part of a working farm. The duo met while working in Manhattan’s restaurant scene—Grenz as a sommelier and McKenzie in restaurant management—before deciding to leave city life behind and try their hand at distilling. They chose the name Tenmile after the creek that runs through the property, which early Dutch settlers called “Tien Mijl Creek.” The distillery produces vodka, gin, whiskey, and seasonal spirits using locally sourced grains when possible. The operation started small, with Grenz and McKenzie doing everything from mashing to bottling themselves in the early days. They’ve since expanded their production capacity while maintaining their hands-on approach to crafting spirits. The barn setting gives the whole operation a rustic, farm-to-glass feel that reflects their commitment to local ingredients and traditional methods adapted for small-batch production.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

What sets Tenmile apart is their commitment to hyperlocal sourcing and their willingness to experiment with unusual botanicals and grains. They work directly with farms within a 50-mile radius for their grain bill, including heirloom corn varieties that add complexity to their whiskey. Their gin features foraged botanicals from their own property, including wild juniper and elderflower that Grenz harvests seasonally. The converted dairy barn isn’t just aesthetic—they use the building’s natural temperature fluctuations to their advantage during fermentation, creating flavor profiles that change subtly with the seasons. McKenzie’s background in restaurant operations shows in their attention to visitor experience, while Grenz’s sommelier training influences their approach to flavor development and tasting room presentations.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

You’ll taste spirits in the original barn’s hayloft, which they’ve converted into a cozy tasting room with exposed beams and views of the surrounding farmland. Grenz or McKenzie often pour tastings themselves, walking you through their production process and the story behind each spirit. The space smells like oak and grain, with hints of the botanicals they’re currently working with. Tours take about 45 minutes and include a walk through the production floor where you can see their copper still and fermentation tanks up close. They’re happy to let you taste spirits at different stages of production if timing works out. The whole experience feels intimate and authentic—more like visiting friends who happen to make excellent spirits than a polished commercial operation.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

If you’re into craft spirits and appreciate the farm-to-glass movement, Tenmile is absolutely worth the drive to Wassaic. The intimate setting and hands-on approach from the founders makes this feel special compared to larger distilleries. You’ll learn more about the actual distilling process here than at most places, and the spirits themselves are genuinely interesting—especially their seasonal gin variations and grain-forward whiskey. It’s not the place for big group tours or flashy presentations, but that’s exactly what makes it appealing. The rural location means you’re making a dedicated trip, but the scenery and the quality of the experience justify the effort. Best suited for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the craft rather than casual tourists looking for entertainment.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting since they’re not always open for walk-ins, especially during busy production periods. GPS can be tricky in this rural area, so look for the red barn set back from Sinpatch Road. They often have limited parking during peak weekend times, so weekday visits tend to be more relaxed. Ask about their current barrel projects when you visit—they’re usually aging something interesting that might not be ready for release yet. If you’re there during late summer or early fall, inquire about their botanical foraging walks, which they occasionally offer to show visitors where they source their gin ingredients. Bring cash for bottle purchases since their card reader can be spotty in the rural location.
