ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Cherokee Welcome In Historic East Texas

Tucked into a historic building on North Church Street in downtown Palestine, Tahwahkaro Distilling Company represents East Texas’s entry into the craft spirits game. The name comes from the Cherokee word meaning “welcome,” which fits since Palestine sits in the heart of what was once Cherokee territory. Founded by local entrepreneur Randy Osborne in 2016, this small-batch operation focuses on bourbon and whiskey production using traditional methods in a restored early 1900s commercial building. The distillery runs a tight ship with Osborne handling much of the operation himself, from mash to bottle. They’re producing bourbon, rye whiskey, and moonshine using locally-sourced grains when possible, with a 500-gallon copper still as the centerpiece of their operation. The setup is compact but purposeful—this isn’t a massive industrial operation, but rather a focused craft distillery that’s putting Palestine on the Texas whiskey map. You’ll find the space has that authentic small-town distillery feel, where the owner might be the one giving your tour and the person behind the tasting bar knows every barrel by name.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Small Town Craft With Real Hands-On Soul

What sets Tahwahkaro apart is its genuine small-town Texas character and Randy Osborne’s hands-on approach to every aspect of production. Unlike many newer distilleries that start with sourced spirits, they’re making everything in-house from day one using their custom 500-gallon copper still. The Cherokee connection runs deeper than just the name—Palestine sits in historically significant Cherokee territory, and that heritage influences their approach to hospitality and craft. They’re also one of the few distilleries in East Texas focusing specifically on bourbon and rye production, giving them a unique position in a region better known for other industries. The building itself adds character, with the restored early 1900s space providing authentic atmosphere you can’t manufacture.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Like Visiting Someone's Whiskey Workshop

Walking into Tahwahkaro feels like visiting someone’s well-organized garage workshop, if that workshop happened to produce excellent whiskey. Randy or one of his team members will likely greet you personally and walk you through the compact but efficient operation. You’ll see the 500-gallon copper still up close, learn about their mash bills, and get a real sense of small-batch production where every step matters. The tasting experience is intimate—you’re not standing at a crowded bar but rather having a conversation about whiskey with people who made it. The space smells like grain and wood, and you can actually see the entire operation from the tasting area. Tours feel more like behind-the-scenes access than formal presentations, which works perfectly for the scale and personality of the operation.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Texas Craft No Corporate Polish

If you appreciate authentic craft distilling without the corporate polish, Tahwahkaro delivers exactly what you’d want from a small Texas distillery. Whiskey enthusiasts will enjoy tasting spirits that are genuinely made on-site and talking directly with the people who made them. It’s not going to wow you with elaborate facilities or slick marketing, but that’s exactly the point. This appeals most to folks who prefer substance over style and want to support genuine local craft production. Don’t expect a full day’s entertainment—this is more of a focused hour or two of quality whiskey education and tasting. If you’re touring East Texas or passing through Palestine, it’s definitely worth the stop for anyone interested in Texas whiskey.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before visiting since this is a small operation that doesn’t always have regular public hours—Randy and his team are often focused on production and appreciate advance notice. The distillery is easy to find on North Church Street in downtown Palestine, with parking available on the street. Ask about their production schedule if you’re interested in seeing the still in operation, as timing can make the visit more interesting. Try their bourbon if it’s available, as that’s where they’re putting most of their focus and expertise. Don’t be surprised if your visit feels more like a personal conversation than a formal tour—that’s the charm of a genuine small-batch operation.
