Sweet Home Spirits sits in a converted industrial space in Leeds, Alabama, about twenty minutes east of Birmingham. Founded in 2019 by husband-and-wife team Jim and Melissa Edmondson, this craft distillery emerged from Jim’s background in chemical engineering and Melissa’s business acumen. They spent two years navigating Alabama’s complex distillery regulations before opening their doors, transforming a former warehouse into a production facility that produces bourbon, moonshine, and flavored spirits. The 4,000-square-foot space houses their custom copper still along with fermentation tanks and a small tasting area where visitors can sample their growing lineup of spirits.
Jim’s engineering background shows in their methodical approach to distillation, focusing on precise temperature control and consistent mash bills. The couple started with traditional Alabama moonshine recipes before expanding into aged bourbon, using new American oak barrels for maturation. Melissa handles the business side while Jim manages production, creating a tight operation that emphasizes quality control over volume. They source corn and wheat from Alabama farms when possible, connecting their spirits to local agriculture. The distillery reflects their no-nonsense approach—functional equipment, straightforward processes, and spirits that let the grain and distillation speak for themselves.
Visitors find a working distillery rather than a polished tourist destination. You’ll see the actual production equipment, smell the sweet corn mash fermenting, and taste spirits that come straight from the barrels they age on-site. The experience feels authentic because it is—this isn’t a show distillery but a real operation where the owners are usually on-site and happy to explain their process. Tours are informal and educational, giving you insight into small-scale craft distilling without the bells and whistles of larger operations.
