ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Philadelphia's First Dedicated Vodka Distillery

Stateside Vodka operates out of a 5,000-square-foot facility in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood at 1700 N Hancock Street, founded by Marat Mamedov in 2013. Mamedov, who immigrated from Ukraine as a child, started the operation with a mission to create premium vodka using American-grown corn and wheat, distilling everything on-site with copper pot stills. The distillery focuses exclusively on vodka production, making it one of the few single-spirit focused operations in the city. The journey began when Mamedov, previously working in hospitality, decided to combine his Eastern European heritage with American ingredients and craftsmanship. He spent two years perfecting his recipe and securing proper permits before opening the distillery doors. The operation runs with a small team, emphasizing hands-on production methods and quality control at every step of the process. Visitors can tour the production facility and see the copper stills in action while learning about the distillation process from grain to bottle. The tasting room offers flights of their different vodka expressions, and you can purchase bottles directly from the source. The space maintains an industrial feel that fits perfectly with Fishtown’s character—exposed brick, concrete floors, and the gleaming copper equipment as the centerpiece.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Ukrainian Techniques Meet American Grain

Stateside stands out as Philadelphia’s first dedicated vodka distillery, focusing solely on perfecting one spirit rather than diversifying across multiple categories. Mamedov’s Ukrainian heritage brings authentic Eastern European vodka-making knowledge to American ingredients, creating a unique cultural bridge in every bottle. The distillery uses a proprietary blend of American corn and wheat, distilling in small batches through copper pot stills rather than the column stills most commercial vodka producers use. This method requires more time and attention but creates a distinctively smooth character with more personality than typical neutral spirits.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Industrial Fishtown Warehouse Copper Stills Running

You’ll walk through the production floor where Mamedov or his team explains the grain-to-glass process, showing off the copper pot stills and fermentation tanks. The facility has that authentic working distillery feel—you can smell the fermentation and hear the equipment running during production days. Tastings happen right in the production space, giving you a behind-the-scenes view while sampling different expressions of their vodka. The atmosphere is casual and educational, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions about the Ukrainian techniques Mamedov incorporates into his American operation.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth It for Vodka Lovers

If you’re interested in vodka or curious about small-scale distilling operations, Stateside offers something genuinely different from the typical bourbon-focused distillery tours. The single-spirit focus means you get deep knowledge about vodka production rather than surface-level information about multiple spirits. It’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the craft behind quality vodka, though bourbon lovers looking for variety might find it too specialized. The personal touch from Mamedov and his team makes this feel more like visiting a craftsman’s workshop than a tourist attraction.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to schedule visits since they’re a small operation and may be in production mode when walk-ins arrive. The distillery is located in an industrial area of Fishtown, so use GPS carefully and look for the Stateside sign on the building. Weekend afternoons tend to be best for tours when production is lighter. Ask about their different vodka expressions and the specific Ukrainian techniques Mamedov uses—he’s passionate about explaining the cultural connections. Street parking is available but can be limited, so arrive a few minutes early to find a spot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Stateside Vodka — Visitor FAQ

What makes pot still vodka different from regular vodka?
Pot still distillation takes longer and requires more skill than column distillation, but it preserves more character and texture in the final product. Most commercial vodkas use column stills for efficiency, but Stateside’s copper pot stills create a smoother, more distinctive vodka with subtle complexity.
Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes, call ahead to schedule your visit since they’re a small operation. They may be in production mode or have limited staff available for tours, so advance booking ensures you’ll get the full experience with proper attention.
What Ukrainian techniques does the founder use?
Marat incorporates traditional Eastern European distillation methods he learned from his Ukrainian heritage, including specific fermentation timing and distillation cuts that emphasize smoothness and character. He combines these old-world techniques with American ingredients and modern equipment.
