Starlight Distillery sits on the historic Huber’s Orchard & Winery property in Borden, Indiana, about 20 miles north of Louisville. Ted Huber, whose family has been farming this land since 1843, launched the distillery in 2001 as an extension of the family’s agricultural legacy. The operation runs out of a renovated barn on the 600-acre farm that’s been in the Huber family for six generations, making it one of Indiana’s pioneering craft distilleries.
Ted’s vision was simple: use the farm’s own corn and the limestone-filtered water from their property to create authentic Indiana spirits. He partnered with master distiller David Pickerell (formerly of Maker’s Mark) to develop their flagship recipes before Pickerell’s passing in 2018. The family approach extends to production, with Ted’s son Greg now serving as head distiller and his daughter managing operations. They’ve stuck to their agricultural roots, growing much of their own grain and maintaining the farm-to-bottle philosophy that started it all.
What you’ll find here isn’t a polished corporate experience but rather a working farm distillery where the Huber family genuinely runs both the farming and distilling operations. The tasting room occupies part of their renovated barn, and tours take you through their grain-to-glass process on the same property where the corn was likely grown. It’s bourbon made by farmers who’ve been working this land for 180 years, and that authenticity shows in everything from their straightforward approach to their willingness to experiment with different grains and aging techniques.
