ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Music Veterans Who Traded Studios for Stills

Standard Proof Whiskey Co. sits in Nashville’s The Nations neighborhood on Rep. John Lewis Way, occupying a converted warehouse that feels more like a neighborhood hangout than a typical distillery. Founded in 2019 by brothers-in-law Josh Dolginow and Sean Josephs, both music industry veterans who got tired of the business side of Nashville and wanted to create something tangible with their hands. They partnered with master distiller Andrea Clodfelter, who brought serious credibility from her time at Corsair Distillery and Jack Daniel’s. The operation focuses on bourbon and rye whiskey, with a 500-gallon copper pot still from Vendome that they run hard to keep up with demand from their tasting room and local bars. What started as weekend passion project between Josh and Sean turned into a full-time gig when they realized they’d rather be making whiskey than booking studio time. Andrea joined the team in early 2020, right before the world went sideways, and helped them dial in their recipes while navigating the chaos of opening during a pandemic. The space itself is raw and industrial—exposed brick, concrete floors, and the constant smell of mash and oak aging. They’re not trying to be fancy, just focused on making solid whiskey that reflects Nashville’s scrappy, DIY spirit without the tourist trap nonsense that’s taken over downtown.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Nashville's Only Pandemic Pivot Success

You won’t find another distillery where the founders literally walked away from music careers to make whiskey in a pandemic. Josh spent years managing recording studios, Sean worked in music publishing, and both got burned out on the politics and decided to pivot completely into spirits. Having Andrea Clodfelter as master distiller gives them serious street cred—she’s one of the few women master distillers in Tennessee and knows her way around both traditional bourbon making and experimental techniques. Their location in The Nations puts them in Nashville’s hottest neighborhood without the Broadway tourist crowds, and they’ve built a loyal local following by focusing on their immediate community rather than trying to appeal to every bachelor party that rolls through town.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Working Warehouse Where Real Distillers Pour

You’ll walk into what feels like a working warehouse because that’s exactly what it is. The tasting room shares space with the production area, so you can watch them actually making whiskey while you’re sampling it. Andrea or one of the other team members usually runs tastings personally, explaining their process while you try their bourbon and rye expressions. The vibe is casual and educational—they want you to understand what goes into each bottle rather than just pushing sales. Tours happen when production allows, giving you an up-close look at their 500-gallon still and barrel storage area. The whole experience feels authentic because it is—no theatrical elements or scripted presentations, just whiskey people talking about whiskey with whoever shows up.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Before the Tourist Crowds Find It

If you’re looking for Instagram-worthy distillery experiences or polished tourist attractions, this isn’t your spot. But if you want to taste well-made whiskey while talking to the actual people who distilled it, Standard Proof delivers. The location makes it perfect for exploring The Nations neighborhood, and you’ll leave feeling like you discovered something before it gets too popular. Serious whiskey drinkers will appreciate Andrea’s technical knowledge and the quality of their spirits, while casual visitors will enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. Just don’t expect gift shops full of branded merchandise or elaborate visitor centers—they’re putting their energy into the whiskey itself.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their social media before showing up, since they sometimes close for production or private events. Parking can be tricky on Rep. John Lewis Way, but there’s usually street parking within a block. The best time to visit is weekend afternoons when they’re most likely to be open for walk-ins and might be running the still. Ask Andrea about their barrel selection process if she’s around—she’s got great stories about sourcing oak and working with cooperages. Don’t expect a full restaurant, but they sometimes have local food trucks or partner with nearby spots for food pairings. If you’re planning to buy bottles, bring cash or cards since they do sell on-site when they have inventory available.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Standard Proof Whiskey Co. — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to book ahead for tastings?
Not usually, but calling ahead is smart since they sometimes close for production or private events. Weekend afternoons are your best bet for walk-ins, but their schedule can vary depending on distilling operations.
Can I meet the master distiller?
Andrea Clodfelter is often around during weekend tastings and loves talking about whiskey making. She brings serious credentials from Corsair and Jack Daniel’s, so if you’re into the technical side of distilling, ask her about their process.
Is this different from the downtown Nashville distillery scene?
Completely different vibe. Standard Proof is in The Nations neighborhood, away from the Broadway tourist crowds. It’s a working distillery first, visitor attraction second, so you get a more authentic experience talking to the actual people making the whiskey.
