ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Horse Stable That Makes Tennessee Whiskey

Stable Reserve Distillery sits in a renovated horse stable on Main Street in Franklin, Tennessee, about 20 miles south of Nashville. Founded in 2019 by husband-and-wife team Matt and Amanda Tombers, this small-batch operation produces bourbon, rye whiskey, and moonshine in what was once part of a working equestrian facility. Matt, a former financial advisor, and Amanda, who worked in hospitality, spent three years converting the 4,000-square-foot space into a functioning distillery while navigating Franklin’s strict zoning laws. Their 500-gallon copper still, custom-made by Vendome Copper & Brass Works, sits where horses once lived. The distillery officially opened its doors in late 2019, making it one of Franklin’s first craft distilleries. They focus on traditional Tennessee methods with a modern twist, aging their spirits in 15-gallon barrels for faster maturation. The tasting room maintains the stable’s original exposed beams and brick walls, creating an atmosphere that feels both rustic and refined. You’ll find locals mixing with tourists here, drawn by the unique setting and the Tombers’ hands-on approach to every aspect of production.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Small Barrels and Personal Attention

The horse stable setting isn’t just aesthetic—the building’s thick stone walls and original ventilation system create ideal aging conditions for their small barrels. Matt handles all the mashing and distilling himself, working in batches of 50 gallons or less, which means every bottle gets personal attention most larger operations can’t match. They use Tennessee spring water and source their grains from farms within 100 miles of Franklin. What really sets them apart is their barrel program: instead of waiting years for traditional aging, they use smaller cooperage and a temperature-controlled environment to achieve complex flavors in 6-18 months. Amanda curates the tasting experience, pairing each spirit with stories about the distilling process and the building’s history.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Distillers Behind Every Bottle

Amanda typically runs tastings in the original stable’s main room, where you’ll sit at a reclaimed wood bar surrounded by aging barrels and photos of the building’s equestrian past. The 45-minute experience includes samples of their current releases with detailed explanations of their grain bills and aging process. Matt often emerges from the production area to explain the technical side, and you can watch him work through large windows that separate the tasting room from the still. The space smells like caramel and oak with hints of the old stable’s cedar beams. Tours happen by appointment and include the mashing area, fermentation tanks, and barrel storage, plus a walk through the building’s original horse stalls.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Franklin's Hidden Gem Worth the Drive

If you’re interested in seeing craft distilling at its most personal level, this is worth the trip to Franklin. The Tombers’ operation gives you access to the actual distillers in a way that’s impossible at larger facilities—Matt will geek out about grain sources and Amanda knows every barrel’s story. It’s particularly good for bourbon enthusiasts who want to understand how different aging approaches affect flavor development. Don’t expect a polished corporate experience; this feels more like visiting friends who happen to make really good whiskey. The setting adds genuine charm without feeling gimmicky, and Franklin’s historic downtown makes it easy to combine with other activities.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or book through their website—they’re often booked solid on weekends, especially during Franklin’s busy tourist seasons. Parking can be tricky on Main Street, but there’s a public lot two blocks east that’s usually available. Ask Matt about their grain sourcing if you catch him during your visit; he’s passionate about supporting local agriculture and has great stories about working with Tennessee farmers. Try their rye if it’s available—it’s become their signature despite starting as an experiment. The distillery sits right in Franklin’s antique district, so you can easily walk to shops and restaurants after your tasting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Stable Reserve Distillery — Visitor FAQ

How far in advance should I book a tasting?
Book at least a week ahead for weekends, especially during spring and fall when Franklin gets busy with tourists. Weekday appointments are easier to secure with 2-3 days notice.
Why do you use smaller barrels instead of standard 53-gallon ones?
The 15-gallon barrels give us more surface area contact with the wood, which accelerates the aging process and lets us develop complex flavors in months rather than years. Matt can also monitor each barrel more closely and make adjustments batch by batch.
Can I see the actual distilling process during my visit?
Matt typically distills Tuesday through Thursday, so you’re most likely to catch him in action during weekend tastings when he’s preparing for the next week’s runs. The production area is visible through windows, and he often comes out to chat with visitors about the process.
