ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Coastal Barn That Makes Award-Worthy Whiskey

Split Rock Distilling sits on the rocky Maine coast in Newcastle, about 15 minutes from downtown Damariscotta. Founded in 2013 by Topher Mallory and Matt Page, two friends who left corporate careers to chase their passion for craft spirits, the distillery operates out of a converted barn that overlooks the Damariscotta River. They specialize in whiskey, gin, and vodka, using locally sourced grains and pristine Maine water. The operation started small with a 250-gallon copper pot still from Vendome Copper & Brass Works, the same company that builds stills for major Kentucky bourbon distilleries. What began as weekend experiments in Mallory’s garage has grown into one of Maine’s most respected craft distilleries, though they’ve kept their focus on quality over quantity. The founders’ backgrounds in business and engineering show in their methodical approach to distillation and their attention to detail in every step of the process. The distillery’s name comes from the rocky Maine coastline that surrounds their location, and you can see why when you visit. The tasting room feels more like a friend’s well-appointed barn than a commercial space, with exposed beams and views of the water that make you want to settle in for the afternoon.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Maine Grains Meet Pristine Well Water

Split Rock stands out for its commitment to using Maine-grown grains whenever possible, working directly with local farmers to source corn, wheat, and rye. Their location gives them access to incredibly pure water from a deep well on the property, which Mallory insists makes a noticeable difference in the final product. The distillery’s small scale means they can experiment with different mash bills and aging techniques that larger operations can’t justify. They’re also one of the few Maine distilleries doing true grain-to-glass production, meaning they handle every step from mashing to bottling on-site. Their gin uses a mix of traditional botanicals and foraged Maine ingredients like wild blueberries and sea beans, creating flavors you won’t find anywhere else.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Friends Teaching Friends How Spirits Are Born

Tours are intimate affairs, usually led by one of the founders or head distiller who can explain not just what they’re doing but why they chose specific techniques. You’ll see the mash tuns, fermentation tanks, and that beautiful copper still up close, and the guides aren’t shy about letting you smell the mash or taste the raw distillate. The tasting room overlooks the production floor, so even if you’re just there for a flight, you can watch the work happening. Tastings typically include their flagship whiskey, gin, and vodka, often with seasonal or experimental spirits thrown in. The whole experience feels personal rather than scripted, and you’ll likely end up in conversations about everything from grain varieties to barrel char levels.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Winding Drive To the Damariscotta River

If you’re interested in craft spirits and appreciate the stories behind small businesses, Split Rock delivers. The setting alone is worth the drive, but the quality of their spirits and the passion of the team make it memorable. This isn’t the place for large groups looking for party atmosphere, but it’s perfect for couples or small groups who want to learn about distillation while tasting genuinely good spirits. The intimate scale means you’ll actually interact with the people making your drinks, which you won’t get at larger operations. It’s also a great stop if you’re exploring the Midcoast Maine area, since Newcastle puts you close to other attractions in the Damariscotta region.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to confirm hours and availability, especially during winter months when they sometimes close for maintenance. The distillery can be tricky to find since it’s on a residential road, so use GPS and look for the small Split Rock sign at the driveway. Parking is limited but usually adequate except during peak summer weekends. Ask about their barrel-aged gin if you’re there at the right time of year, and don’t miss their cask-strength whiskey if they have it available. The founders are usually around and happy to talk shop if you have questions about their process. If you’re planning to buy bottles, bring cash or check since they don’t always accept cards for retail sales.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Split Rock Distilling — Visitor FAQ

Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes, especially during summer months and weekends. Split Rock is a small operation and they want to ensure someone’s available to give you proper attention. Calling a day or two ahead is usually sufficient.
What makes Split Rock different from other Maine distilleries?
They’re one of the few doing true grain-to-glass production using Maine-grown grains whenever possible. Their gin incorporates foraged Maine ingredients like wild blueberries and sea beans, creating unique coastal flavors you won’t find elsewhere.
How long do tours typically last?
Tours usually run 45 minutes to an hour, depending on group size and how many questions you have. The founders and distillers love talking about their process, so tours can easily stretch longer if you’re genuinely interested.
