ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Retirement Project That Became County History

Southern Trail Distillery sits on 27227 Morganza Turner Road in Mechanicsville, Maryland, about an hour south of Baltimore in Charles County. Founded by Ray and Brenda Dodson in 2017, this craft distillery occupies a converted warehouse on their family property where they’ve been making small-batch spirits for nearly seven years. Ray, who spent decades in construction before diving into distilling, partnered with his wife to create something that would connect their rural Maryland community to the craft spirits movement. They produce bourbon, rye whiskey, moonshine, and flavored spirits using traditional methods and locally-sourced grains when possible. The operation started as a retirement project but quickly grew into a legitimate business when word spread about their quality products. The Dodsons handle most operations themselves, from mashing and fermentation to bottling and retail sales, though they’ve brought on help as demand increased. Their 2,000-square-foot facility houses copper stills, fermentation tanks, and a small tasting area where visitors can sample their lineup. What began as Ray’s hobby experimenting with recipes in his garage has evolved into Charles County’s first legal distillery since Prohibition. The location feels authentically rural – you’re surrounded by farmland and forests, which gives tastings a genuine country atmosphere that’s hard to find closer to major cities.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

First Legal Distillery Since Prohibition

Southern Trail holds the distinction of being Charles County’s first legal distillery since Prohibition ended, making it a genuine piece of local history. Ray Dodson’s background in construction shows up in unexpected ways – he built much of the distillery infrastructure himself, including custom fermentation tanks and storage systems that reflect both practical knowledge and cost-conscious bootstrapping. The rural location means they’re not competing with urban craft cocktail scenes or tourist-heavy wine country crowds. Instead, you get an authentic farm distillery experience where the founders are usually on-site and genuinely excited to talk about their process. Their small scale means they can experiment with recipes and techniques that larger operations can’t risk, and they’ve developed relationships with local grain suppliers that give their spirits a distinctly Maryland character.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Meet the Makers Not the Marketing

You’ll typically be greeted by Ray or Brenda themselves, who give personal tours of their compact but efficient operation. The space feels more like visiting someone’s well-organized workshop than a slick commercial facility, which works in its favor. You can see the entire process from grain to bottle in one building, and the Dodsons explain each step without overwhelming technical jargon. Tastings happen at a simple bar setup where you’ll sample their current lineup, which usually includes their flagship bourbon, rye whiskey, and several moonshine varieties including flavored options. The atmosphere is relaxed and educational rather than flashy – you’re learning from people who genuinely love what they’re doing and aren’t trying to impress you with fancy marketing. The rural setting means you might hear chickens or farm equipment in the background, which adds to the authentic country distillery vibe.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Authentic Craft Worth the Drive

If you’re looking for a polished, Instagram-ready distillery experience with craft cocktails and gourmet food, this isn’t it. But if you want to meet actual distillers, learn about small-batch production, and taste spirits made by people who know every barrel personally, Southern Trail delivers something increasingly rare. It’s perfect for spirits enthusiasts who appreciate meeting the makers and understanding the craft behind the bottle. The drive down rural Maryland roads feels like a proper adventure, and you’ll leave with bottles you can’t find anywhere else plus stories about how they’re made. Just don’t expect bells and whistles – the value here is authenticity and personal connection to the craft.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before visiting since hours can vary depending on production schedules and the Dodsons’ availability. The address can be tricky for GPS systems, so use the exact street address and look for distillery signage on the property. Parking is informal but adequate on gravel areas near the building. Bring cash for purchases since card processing isn’t always available. Ask Ray about his construction background and how he built the distillery equipment – it’s a fascinating story that most visitors miss. If you’re interested in the technical side, time your visit during production days when you can see the stills running. The tasting fee is modest, and bottles are reasonably priced for craft spirits. Don’t rush the experience – the Dodsons enjoy talking about their process and local history if you show genuine interest.
