Southern Kentucky Distillery sits on Albany Road in Burkesville, a small town in south-central Kentucky that’s about as authentic as bourbon country gets. Founded by Mark and Pam Bourbon (yes, that’s their real last name) in 2018, this family operation started as a retirement project that quickly became something much bigger. Mark spent 30 years in manufacturing before deciding he wanted to make something people would actually enjoy consuming, and Pam brought her business management background to handle the operation side. They converted a 6,000-square-foot building that previously housed a furniture warehouse into their distillery, keeping the original concrete floors and adding custom-built copper stills from Louisville.
The Bourbons didn’t stumble into distilling by accident. Mark had been home-distilling legally for years and won several competitions at the Kentucky State Fair before they decided to go commercial. Getting the operation licensed took nearly three years of navigating federal and state regulations, but they finally opened their doors in late 2018. Their master distiller credentials come from Mark’s extensive self-education and mentorship from established Kentucky distillers who helped him refine his recipes. They focus exclusively on bourbon and rye whiskey, producing about 2,000 bottles per month using a 500-gallon copper pot still.
Visitors get a genuine small-town distillery experience here. You’re not walking through a polished tourist attraction—this is a working distillery where you’ll likely meet Mark or Pam personally during your visit. The tasting room occupies the front of the building with windows looking directly into the production area, so you can watch the actual distilling process if you time it right. They age their whiskey in full-size 53-gallon barrels stored in a climate-controlled warehouse on-site, and Mark will gladly explain why he chose specific char levels and how Cumberland County’s limestone water affects the final product.
