ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Family Named Bourbon Makes the Real Thing

Southern Kentucky Distillery sits on Albany Road in Burkesville, a small town in south-central Kentucky that’s about as authentic as bourbon country gets. Founded by Mark and Pam Bourbon (yes, that’s their real last name) in 2018, this family operation started as a retirement project that quickly became something much bigger. Mark spent 30 years in manufacturing before deciding he wanted to make something people would actually enjoy consuming, and Pam brought her business management background to handle the operation side. They converted a 6,000-square-foot building that previously housed a furniture warehouse into their distillery, keeping the original concrete floors and adding custom-built copper stills from Louisville. The Bourbons didn’t stumble into distilling by accident. Mark had been home-distilling legally for years and won several competitions at the Kentucky State Fair before they decided to go commercial. Getting the operation licensed took nearly three years of navigating federal and state regulations, but they finally opened their doors in late 2018. Their master distiller credentials come from Mark’s extensive self-education and mentorship from established Kentucky distillers who helped him refine his recipes. They focus exclusively on bourbon and rye whiskey, producing about 2,000 bottles per month using a 500-gallon copper pot still. Visitors get a genuine small-town distillery experience here. You’re not walking through a polished tourist attraction—this is a working distillery where you’ll likely meet Mark or Pam personally during your visit. The tasting room occupies the front of the building with windows looking directly into the production area, so you can watch the actual distilling process if you time it right. They age their whiskey in full-size 53-gallon barrels stored in a climate-controlled warehouse on-site, and Mark will gladly explain why he chose specific char levels and how Cumberland County’s limestone water affects the final product.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Hyper-Local Bourbon From Kentucky's Backroads

The Bourbon family name isn’t a marketing gimmick—it’s been their surname for generations, making them possibly the only bourbon distillery actually owned by people named Bourbon. Beyond the nominative destiny, what sets them apart is their hyper-local approach in an area where most bourbon production moved to bigger cities decades ago. They source their corn from farms within 30 miles of the distillery and use water from their own well that taps into the same limestone aquifer that made Kentucky bourbon famous. Mark’s background in precision manufacturing shows up in his meticulous attention to fermentation temperatures and cut points, using digital monitoring systems typically found in much larger operations. They’re also one of the few distilleries still doing single-barrel hand selection where customers can literally taste from different barrels and choose which one gets bottled for them.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

No Tourist Traps Just Honest Craft

You’ll walk into a no-frills tasting room where Mark or Pam will likely greet you personally and ask what brought you to Burkesville. The tour covers their entire 6,000-square-foot operation, from the grain room where you can smell the sweet corn they’ll mash that week to the copper stills that Mark fires up twice weekly. The warehouse holds about 800 barrels, and you’ll get to hear the story behind their barrel selection process while breathing in those rich oak and caramel aromas. Tastings include their flagship bourbon and rye, plus whatever experimental batches they have aging. Mark loves talking technical details if you’re interested, or he’ll keep it simple if you just want to know what tastes good. The whole experience feels like visiting friends who happen to make exceptional whiskey in their backyard.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Drive Off the Beaten Path

If you’re looking for a genuine, unpretentious bourbon experience away from the crowded tourist trail, this place delivers exactly that. You won’t find gift shops full of branded merchandise or slick marketing presentations—just honest people making quality bourbon and happy to share their story. It’s perfect for bourbon enthusiasts who want to understand the craft without the crowds, or anyone driving through south-central Kentucky who wants to stop somewhere authentically local. The tastings are reasonably priced, and you’ll likely learn something new about bourbon production even if you think you know the process. Don’t expect elaborate food pairings or cocktail programs, but do expect to taste bourbon that holds its own against much more expensive bottles from famous distilleries.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead to make sure they’re open since hours can vary based on production schedules, and Mark occasionally closes for deliveries or equipment maintenance. The distillery is about 15 minutes off the main highway, so GPS is helpful, though locals know exactly where it is if you get lost. Saturday afternoons tend to be the busiest, while weekday visits often mean more one-on-one time with the owners. Ask Mark about his barrel selection process if you’re interested in purchasing a single barrel for yourself or a group—he loves walking people through the differences between barrels from the same mash bill. Bring cash since they sometimes have issues with card readers, though they do accept cards most of the time. If you’re driving from Louisville or Nashville, it makes a perfect halfway stop, and there are several decent restaurants in downtown Burkesville if you want to grab lunch.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Southern Kentucky Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Is the Bourbon family name really their actual surname?
Yes, Mark and Pam Bourbon is their real family name, not a marketing creation. Mark jokes that he felt destined to make bourbon once he learned about Kentucky’s bourbon heritage, though the family name is coincidental to their decision to start distilling.
How far in advance do I need to book a visit?
No reservations are required for regular tastings and tours, but calling ahead is recommended since hours can vary based on production schedules. If you want a single barrel selection or have a large group, definitely call a day or two in advance.
What’s the difference between their bourbon and rye?
Their bourbon uses wheat instead of rye in the mash bill, creating a smoother, sweeter profile with vanilla and honey notes. The rye whiskey has a traditional high-rye mash bill that delivers more spice and heat, with cinnamon and pepper flavors that linger longer on the finish.
