ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Michigan Grain Whiskey Worth Finding

Sanctuary Spirits sits on East Saginaw Highway in Grand Ledge, Michigan, about 20 minutes west of Lansing. Founded by husband-and-wife team Aaron and Kim Bergh in 2018, this craft distillery emerged from Aaron’s background in brewing and their shared passion for creating premium spirits. The couple converted a former industrial space into their production facility and tasting room, installing custom copper stills and creating an intimate space where visitors can watch the entire distillation process. They focus on small-batch bourbon, rye whiskey, and seasonal spirits, with everything distilled, aged, and bottled on-site. The Berghs didn’t take the typical path to distilling. Aaron spent years in the brewing industry before deciding to pivot to spirits, bringing his fermentation expertise and attention to detail into whiskey production. Kim handles much of the business operations and visitor experience, creating the welcoming atmosphere that defines Sanctuary. They chose Grand Ledge specifically for its proximity to quality grain sources and the supportive local community. The name ‘Sanctuary’ reflects their vision of creating a peaceful retreat where people can slow down and appreciate handcrafted spirits. When you visit, you’re stepping into their working distillery where the smell of fermenting mash and aging oak fills the air. The tasting room feels more like a friend’s well-appointed basement bar than a corporate facility, with exposed brick, warm lighting, and spirits displayed behind a handcrafted bar. You can see the stills through large windows, and on production days, you’ll witness the actual distillation process. The experience centers around education and conversation, with Aaron or Kim often personally guiding tastings and sharing stories about their journey from brewing to distilling.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

From Local Farms To Your Glass

Sanctuary Spirits stands out for its genuine grain-to-glass approach in a state not traditionally known for whiskey production. Aaron and Kim Bergh source their corn and wheat from Michigan farms within 50 miles of the distillery, supporting local agriculture while ensuring quality control over their mash bills. Their small-batch approach means they’re producing around 20 barrels at a time, allowing for careful attention to each batch’s fermentation and distillation. The couple’s brewing background shows in their meticulous approach to fermentation, using techniques that create complex flavor profiles often missing in newer craft distilleries. They age their whiskeys in full-size 53-gallon barrels rather than smaller barrels that speed up the process but can create overly oaky flavors.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Owners Pour Every Single Tasting

You’ll find yourself in an intimate setting where Aaron or Kim personally guide most tastings, sharing stories about their transition from brewing to distilling and explaining their production methods. The tasting room features a handcrafted bar made from reclaimed wood, with spirits bottles displayed against exposed brick walls. Large windows let you peer into the production area where copper stills and fermentation tanks are visible, and you can smell the sweet aroma of fermenting grains and aging whiskey. Tastings typically include their flagship bourbon and rye, plus seasonal offerings, with detailed explanations of mash bills and aging processes. The atmosphere encourages questions and conversation, making it feel more like visiting knowledgeable friends than a commercial tour.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Hidden Gem Twenty Minutes from Lansing

If you appreciate genuine craft distilling and intimate experiences, Sanctuary delivers. This isn’t a polished corporate operation with scripted tours, but rather a working distillery where passionate owners share their craft directly with visitors. Whiskey enthusiasts will appreciate the Michigan grain sourcing story and the chance to taste truly small-batch spirits that aren’t distributed widely. The personal attention from Aaron and Kim makes each visit unique, and you’ll leave understanding their process and philosophy. However, if you prefer large-scale operations with extensive food options or entertainment, this might feel too low-key. The spirits are well-crafted but young, so bourbon collectors seeking aged expressions should adjust expectations accordingly.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead or check their website before visiting, as hours can vary with production schedules and they sometimes close for private events. Parking is available on-site, but the location on East Saginaw Highway can be easy to miss, so look for their modest signage. Weekend afternoons tend to be busier, while weekday visits often provide more one-on-one time with the owners. Ask Aaron about their fermentation process if you’re interested in the technical side, or inquire about their grain sourcing story if you care about local agriculture. They often have limited seasonal releases available only at the distillery, so ask what’s currently exclusive to on-site purchases. The tasting room can get warm during summer production days, so dress accordingly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Sanctuary — Visitor FAQ

Do Aaron and Kim personally handle tastings?
Yes, one of the owners typically guides tastings and tours, sharing their personal journey from brewing to distilling. This personal touch makes each visit unique and educational, as you’re learning directly from the people who make the spirits.
What makes their bourbon different from others?
They use a wheat-forward mash bill with Michigan-sourced grains, creating a softer, sweeter profile than traditional rye-heavy bourbons. All grains come from farms within 50 miles of the distillery, and Aaron’s brewing background shows in their careful fermentation process.
How young are their whiskeys?
Their current releases are approximately two years old, as they opened in 2018. While young, the spirits show good development and complexity. They’re aging longer-term stocks that will provide older expressions in coming years.
