ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

San Diego Distillery operates from a Spring Valley industrial complex, founded by Michael Steppe in 2015. Steppe brought distilling experience from the Midwest and set up shop in this unlikely location about 15 minutes east of downtown San Diego. The facility produces vodka, gin, and whiskey in small batches using a custom copper still setup. What started as a one-man operation has grown into a legitimate craft distillery that’s been quietly building a local following. The tasting room feels more like visiting someone’s well-equipped garage than a polished tourist destination, which actually works in its favor. You’re tasting spirits where they’re made, not in some separate retail space designed by committee.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

This is San Diego County’s first legal distillery since Prohibition, which gives it legitimate historical significance beyond the usual craft distillery claims. Steppe focuses on grain-to-glass production using locally sourced ingredients when possible, including San Diego honey in some expressions. The operation runs lean and personal—you’ll likely meet the distiller himself during visits. The location in Spring Valley puts it off the typical tourist path, so you get an authentic behind-the-scenes experience rather than a polished show.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Visits are intimate affairs since the space isn’t huge and tours are typically led by Steppe himself or someone directly involved in production. You’ll walk through the entire process from grain to bottle, see the mash tanks and copper still up close, and taste products straight from the source. The atmosphere is casual and educational—expect to learn actual distilling details rather than getting a scripted presentation. The tasting room doubles as part of the working distillery, so you might hear equipment running or smell mash cooking during your visit.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

This appeals to people who want the real craft distillery experience without the tourist polish. If you’re into learning how spirits are actually made and don’t mind an industrial setting, you’ll appreciate the authenticity. It’s not going to wow casual visitors expecting a slick operation with Instagram-worthy spaces. The spirits are solid and the education is genuine, making it worthwhile for anyone seriously interested in craft distilling. Just don’t expect bells and whistles—you’re here for the product and process.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead since this isn’t a walk-in operation and hours can vary based on production schedules. The Spring Valley location can be tricky to find in the industrial complex, so double-check the unit number and look for signage. Weekend visits tend to be better since that’s when Steppe is most available for personal tours. Ask about the whiskey aging process and local ingredient sourcing—those are areas where his knowledge really shows. Don’t come expecting a full bar experience; this is about tasting what they make, not cocktail service.
