ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

A Working Iowa Farm That Makes Its Own Spirits

S & B Farms Distillery sits on a working farm in rural Bancroft, Iowa, where Scott and Brenda Finch turned their agricultural roots into something stronger. The husband-and-wife team launched their distillery operation in 2018 after years of farming corn and other grains, deciding to take their crops from field to bottle rather than just selling them off. Their farmstead operation combines traditional farming with craft distilling, using grains they grow themselves on the surrounding acreage. The distillery produces vodka, gin, and moonshine from their own corn, wheat, and other crops, creating a true farm-to-bottle operation that’s become increasingly rare in the spirits world. What started as a way to add value to their farm production has evolved into a destination where visitors can see the entire process from growing to distilling. The Finches handle most operations themselves, from farming to fermentation to bottling, giving them complete control over their product quality and allowing them to tell the complete story of their spirits from seed to sip.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

From Seed to Sip Same Family Farm

The farm-to-bottle authenticity here isn’t marketing speak—it’s literally their business model. Scott and Brenda grow the corn, wheat, and other grains that become their spirits right on the property, which means they control every step from planting to bottling. This level of vertical integration is extremely rare in craft distilling, where most operations buy their grains from suppliers. The agricultural setting gives visitors a completely different perspective on spirits production, showing how the farming decisions made months earlier directly impact what ends up in the bottle.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Not a Tasting Room An Actual Farm

You’re visiting an actual working farm, so expect a more rustic, authentic experience than polished tasting rooms in town. The Finches typically handle tours and tastings personally, walking you through both their farming operation and distillation process. You’ll see the grain fields during growing season, learn about their farming practices, and then tour the distillery building where they transform their harvest into spirits. Tastings focus on their core lineup of vodka, gin, and moonshine, with the Finches explaining how different grains and farming techniques affect flavor profiles.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Worth the Rural Drive For Real Farm Stories

This appeals most to people genuinely interested in agricultural spirits and farm operations rather than those looking for a polished tasting room experience. If you’re fascinated by the connection between farming and distilling, or you enjoy supporting true farm businesses, it’s worth the drive to rural Iowa. The experience is more educational and authentic than entertaining, so set expectations accordingly. It’s not going to compete with larger distilleries on amenities, but it offers something they can’t—complete transparency from soil to spirit.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead since this is a small farm operation with limited regular hours. The experience varies significantly by season—visit during growing season to see the grain fields, or during harvest to understand the full cycle. Ask about their different grains and how farming decisions impact flavor. The location is rural, so double-check GPS directions and expect gravel roads. Bring cash for bottle purchases since card processing can be spotty in rural areas.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

S & B Farms Distillery — Visitor FAQ

Do you really grow all your own grains?
Yes, Scott and Brenda grow corn, wheat, and other grains right on their farm property. They can literally show you the fields where the grains for your bottle were grown, which makes them one of the few truly farm-to-bottle operations in Iowa.
What’s the best time of year to visit?
Growing season through harvest offers the most complete experience since you can see the grains in the field and understand the full farm-to-bottle process. Fall harvest time is particularly interesting if you want to see how they go from field to fermentation.
How far in advance should I book a visit?
Call at least a few days ahead since this is a working farm with variable schedules based on farming activities. Weather and seasonal farm work can affect availability, so flexibility helps when scheduling your visit.
