ABOUT THIS DISTILLERY

Automotive Engineer Turned Whiskey Maker

Rusted Crow Distillery sits on Telegraph Road in Dearborn Heights, bringing craft spirits to Detroit’s western suburbs. Founded by Dave Landrum, a former automotive engineer who traded pistons for pot stills, the distillery opened its doors in 2018 after years of planning and navigating Michigan’s evolving craft distillery laws. The operation runs out of a converted industrial space that Landrum and his team transformed into a working distillery and tasting room, complete with custom copper stills and aging barrels. Landrum’s journey from the auto industry to craft distilling reflects Detroit’s broader economic transformation. After decades in automotive manufacturing, he saw an opportunity to create something tangible and lasting in the spirits world. The transition wasn’t easy—convincing banks to fund a distillery startup, learning the intricacies of federal and state regulations, and building a customer base from scratch. But Landrum’s engineering background proved valuable in designing efficient production systems and maintaining consistent quality control. Today, Rusted Crow produces bourbon, rye, and vodka on-site, with a focus on small-batch production that allows for experimentation and quality control. The tasting room offers visitors a chance to sample spirits straight from the source while watching the production process unfold. It’s not the most polished operation you’ll find, but there’s something authentic about tasting spirits where they’re actually made, with the founder often behind the bar explaining his process and philosophy.

WHAT SETS THEM APART

Detroit Blue Collar Meets Craft Spirits

What sets Rusted Crow apart is its genuine grassroots approach to craft distilling. This isn’t a vanity project or corporate venture—it’s the result of one man’s career pivot and determination to create quality spirits in a region better known for cars than whiskey. The distillery’s location in Dearborn Heights puts it in the heart of Detroit’s industrial corridor, giving it an authentic blue-collar edge that matches the founder’s automotive background. The operation remains small enough that you’ll likely meet Landrum himself during your visit, and he’s genuinely passionate about explaining his process and the challenges of building a distillery from scratch in Michigan.

THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Talk Directly With The Guy Who Built It

Walking into Rusted Crow feels like visiting someone’s serious hobby that grew into a business. The space has that converted-warehouse feel, with exposed brick and industrial fixtures mixed with the warm copper glow of the stills. Landrum or his team will walk you through the production area, explaining how they mill grain, ferment mash, and run their distillation cycles. The tasting room is intimate—maybe a dozen people max—which means you get personal attention and can ask detailed questions about the spirits. You’ll smell the sweet corn mash and oak aging barrels, and the whole experience feels authentic rather than polished.

IS IT WORTH VISITING

Real Craft Distilling No Corporate Polish

If you’re interested in the nuts and bolts of craft distilling and appreciate talking directly with the person who built the operation, Rusted Crow is worth the trip. This appeals most to spirits enthusiasts who want to understand the process and support a genuine local startup. You won’t find the slick production values of larger distilleries, but you will get an honest look at small-batch distilling and taste spirits that are actually made on-site. It’s particularly interesting for anyone curious about Detroit’s economic diversification beyond automotive manufacturing.

⚠️ VISITING TIPS

Call ahead before making the drive out to Dearborn Heights—hours can vary based on production schedules and Landrum’s availability. The location on Telegraph Road is straightforward to find, with adequate parking in front of the building. Weekend afternoons tend to be the best time to catch the full experience, as that’s when they’re most likely to be running tours and have the widest selection available for tasting. Don’t expect a large gift shop or extensive food offerings—this is primarily about the spirits and the story behind them.
